The post 5 dining room trends you’re about to see everywhere in 2025 appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Over the years, the traditional formal dining room has evolved into a more relaxed, multi-functional space that used for eating, relaxing and working—but are the tables turning back again? 2025 is seeing a surprising return of the formal dining room and more intentional meal times.

As we enter 2025, we take you through five of the biggest dining room trends you’re about to see everywhere.

1. Formal dining rooms

According to Neale Whitaker, the formal dining room is back. The interior designer and Love it or List It host recently took to Instagram to share his 2025 interior design trend predictions, where he highlighted the return of the dining space as a separate room. “Separate dining rooms—not dining zones, not little areas leading off the kitchen—but good, old-fashioned dining rooms are back,” Whitaker explained.

The return of the formal dining space seems to be part of a greater shift away from open-plan living, which is seeing more of us gravitate towards more individualised spaces. The shift might be a reaction to our post-Covid-19 era of working and relaxing in the exact same space—which may also be occupied by other members of the household. It may also indicate a desire for a more intentional dining space that isn’t conducive to our phones and other screens that rule our lives. Plus, a separate dining room also keeps the kitchen mess out of view.

2. Round dining tables

Curves are making their way into every aspect of interior design—including the dining room, with the classic long rectangular dining table officially being replaced by more modest round styles. The compact design of round dining tables doesn’t only benefit small spaces (which more of us are living in thanks to the rise in housing prices) but also offer a more intimate setting for group conversations.

3. Textured seating

Weaved textures such as rattan and wicker were identified as one of the year’s biggest interior trends in Home Beautiful’s 2025 design forecast and the dining area is one of the areas we’re seeing this trend really take hold. As a traditionally coastal texture, rattan is well suited to relaxed Australian dining settings, with everything from mid-century inspired teak dining chairs to cosy cane armchairs bringing the material into the dining room.

4. Banquette seating

The popularity of banquette seating has been rising for a little while now and it’s not going anywhere in 2025. With it’s space-saving abilities, banquette seating suits all styles and sizes of kitchen and is known to be a family-friendly seating option as well—convincing your kids to sit at the table isn’t hard when it feels like a couch.

5. A pop of colour

As we move away from the ‘sad-beige’ aesthetic that has dominated our homes over the last 15 years, we’re seeing more colour enter our dining rooms. In this space, it tends to be painted wood that reigns, with often a brightly painted wooden dining chair bringing some brightness to our daily meals. A pop of unexpected red or yellow work particularly well but there’s nothing stopping you from branching out to the rest of the colour wheel.

No piece of furniture serves a small living space better than the extendable dining table. With the ability to expand as needed, it makes throwing a dinner party possible in the most petite of spaces.

The functionality of the extendable dining table also means that when you’re not hosting guests, you can collapse the table back to a size that’s more suitable for everyday living.

In other words, an extendable dining table gives you the best of both worlds — but how do you find the right one for your space?

Whether it’s for squeezing a few extra family members around the table at Christmas or hosting your dream long-table dinner parties under the stars in your back garden, there are a few features to consider. That includes the shape — with options including square, round and rectangular — as well as the material, style and size of the table.

Should I buy a rectangular or round extendable dining table?

(Photographer: Simon Whitbread | Styling: Corina Koch)

When it comes to choosing the right shape for your extendable dining table, it’s important to consider its fully extended size.

An extended rectangular table will usually fit more people around it and take up more room than a round version.

However, it really comes down to the peculiarities of your own space. In some spaces, a rectangular extendable dining table that you can place up against the wall will be more practical than a round one that requires more space to fit chairs around it.

Just remember to make sure that the collapsed and extended version of the table both fit within the space you need them to.

This key furniture piece will solve your living room storage in a snap https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/what-is-a-sideboard/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 07:26:34 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/what-is-a-sideboard-used-for Organic, yet sleek in profile, a sideboard is the perfect surface to display collected pieces PLUS hide the mess of daily life.

The post This key furniture piece will solve your living room storage in a snap appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Picture this: your living room and dining room are coming together beautifully. You’ve found the perfect dining table and have spent hours arranging cushions on your new sofa in the right combination of size, texture, colour and pattern. You’ve settled on a fabulous artwork to hang and have gathered your platters, napery and dinnerware. But something is… missing. Where to store it all? Where to display your favourite pieces? Enter, the sideboard: an elegant solution that solves your style and storage needs in one sophisticated statement. Very grown up.

Homeowner, Mieke spent several years gradually sourcing the perfect pieces to add character to her Gold Coast waterfront home. A treasured find is her timber sideboard which, teamed with Boyd Blue prints and a palm lamp from Beacon Lighting, adds a tropical plantation feel. (Credit: Photography: Elouise Van Riet-Gray / Stylist: Lana Caves)

Also called a buffet, there’s a reason the classic sideboard is enjoying a renaissance. Getting the edge on storage is a game changer in living and dining zones. Storage should be affordable and functional, yet discreetly hardworking enough to declutter a space and celebrate your style. Extra points for furnishings that provide a big bang for your buck. Buying a brand-new piece like this is an investment, so do your homework and choose a style you love that will endure and work with other key furniture pieces, such as your dining table or sofa.

Unique in structure, the Pila buffet from OZ Design brings a touch of elegance into your home. Using a captivating slat design, the body is made of solid American Oak timber for a natural look and the top holds beautiful Italian Travertine.

If your budget is limited and you’re prepared to wait, play the long game with regular trips to your local op shop or get online to Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree to hunt for a vintage find. Remember to measure your space to ensure plenty of room for your new sideboard to shine.

3 tips for styling your sideboard

1. Keep it simple

Edit, edit, edit. Less is more so only display what you love. Group items in threes and opt for different shapes and geometry. Start with your favourite lamp at one end, then include one taller piece, one medium-sized and one smaller object to anchor the arrangement. It helps for items to be relative to the space, eg. a decanter if your buffet is in the dining room.

2. Use a mix of textures

Give the eye something to focus on as it passes over your vignette. A great combination might start with a stack of books or a tray to form a base and corral pieces together, then top with a glass or ceramic vase or textural sculpture – something natural or handmade.

3. Work to a colour palette

Link the colours of the objects you display to one another, as well as something else in the room – perhaps an artwork, cushion or sofa upholstery. This will draw the eye around the room and create a pleasing, cohesive decorative result. Feel free to change it up and rotate your favourite objects with the seasons or with new pieces to keep things interesting.

How do you organise a coffee station at home?

Assuming you’ll be at your coffee station most mornings, you’ll need it to be organised, functional and stylish. You’ll want to avoid digging behind shelves or awkwardly reaching for mugs every morning as much as possible. The way you set up your coffee station will dictate this.

A simple rule to follow is to identify what items are ‘high-reach’, ‘medium-reach’, and ‘low-reach’ and work from there. High-reach items are things you’ll be using every single time you make a cuppa Joe. For example, your favourite coffee mug and a WDT tool would fit in this category easily. You can’t make a cup of coffee without a mug. Medium-reach items could be sugar or syrups (unless you must have sugar with your coffees), especially if you only occasionally indulge in a flavoured coffee. Low-reach items include extra coffee beans, filters, or cleaning equipment.

Once you’ve identified every single item in your set-up as high, medium, or low reach, you can organise accordingly. Place high-reach items closer to you (with no obstacles, if you can help), and low-reach items can be tucked away as you won’t need them daily. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but you’ll be surprised by the difference this will make.

What is the best coffee machine for an at-home setup?

There’s no point thinking about all the wonderful coffee machine accessories you could add to your coffee station if you haven’t decided on a reliable at-home coffee machine. There are an array of models and brands to choose from, and lucky for you, we’ve picked out the top at-home coffee machines, here, for your convenience.

In praise of the oval dining table, we’ve found the best ones available in Australia https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/dining-room-ideas/best-oval-dining-tables/ Mon, 20 May 2024 06:28:10 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1064196 Why you should be thinking outside the…rectangle.

The post In praise of the oval dining table, we’ve found the best ones available in Australia appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
We’re big fans of oval dining tables. They offer the best of both worlds, incorporating the key features of a rectangular dining table with the elongated, curvy aesthetics of a round dining table. There’s plenty to love about this often-overlooked gem – space to stretch out, set up a laptop at one end or squeeze an extra body along the side when friends drop in. There’s also the undeniable elegance of a rounded edge to soften a space filled with corners on sideboards and kitchen islands.

When considering the dining room layout, an oval dining table cleverly uses the available space because it’s longer than it is wide, yet tends to be more compact and streamlined than a conventional rectangular dining table. It’s a great choice when space is at a premium because dining chairs tend to hug the oval shape more closely, making for intimate dinners with guests sitting closer together – both when the table is full or when just two or four diners are seated.

Even in a busy family home with an open plan kitchen, living or dining layout can use fewer sharp corners to run into. Plus, with this design, you can get away with a decent length without the bulk of the squared-off silhouette.

Do oval dining tables suit any style of home?

It’s always a good idea to incorporate curves in your interior design where possible, and oval shapes can sit well in any style of home. Classic for a mid-century modern interior, they continue to lend a contemporary edge to interiors, but make for a refreshing change in shape.

Ready to add the popular oval dining table to your home dining experience? We’ve searched high and low (online) and rounded up the best oval dining tables to shop in Australia below.

Egg cups come in endless shapes and colours; some are pedestal-shaped, some have a nifty saucer (designed to catch runaway yolk) while others are outrageous and kistch, shaped like chickens, historical figures and even buildings. All of this is to say that egg cups are fun to collect. In fact, there’s even a name for the hobby: pocillovy.

How to pick the perfect pendant light for over your dining table https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/dining-room-ideas/how-to-pick-the-perfect-pendant-light-for-your-dining-room/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 00:41:30 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/how-to-pick-the-perfect-pendant-light-for-your-dining-room A show-stopping pendant is the ultimate style statement

The post How to pick the perfect pendant light for over your dining table appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Choosing the right pendant light for over your dining table can make a big difference to the atmosphere you create for meals and entertaining. Here are five tips to help you choose. You want to make an eye-catching impression but there are rules of design that come into play here. Size, colour, material and the height you hang the pendant above your dining table are all elements that need to be worked out for the best result.

Resolving all of these factors might not be as straightforward as it first seems so we asked the expert – GlobeWest Showroom Manager, Mimi Weir – for the dos and don’ts of picking the perfect pendant for your dining room.

1. Choose the right size pendant in relation to your dining table

“When selecting a pendant for your dining room, whether it’s a round or rectangular dining table getting the proportions right are key. A good tip to go by is working with a third of the table length. For example, a round dining table at 1200mm DIA would require a pendant no larger than 500mm DIA. This way the pendant isn’t dominating the space, but creating a feature to the table itself.”

2. How do you achieve va va voom with a pendant and choose a table to match it?

“I am a believer in ‘less is more’, however in a dining space where the pendant will be a central feature you can be more adventurous and have a bit more fun. To create that ‘wow factor’ you could opt for more of a textured fitting such as clay beads, woven rattan or leather strapping.

Hanging a cluster of pendants at different levels can create interest too. When selecting a dining table to go back with it, I would find something more simple in design and material as this way it will complement your pendants rather than compete.”

3. Is it ok to mix styles?

Absolutely!! Mixing materials will create an eclectic space giving off warm texture and an inviting glam environment to entertain.

Here, this woven rattan pendant light adds a sophisticated rustic charm to a variety of styles – from coastal, mid-century modern, bohemian, and more. From $149, purchase from Temple & Webster.

4. How high above the table surface should you hang your pendant?

When hanging pendants above your dining table I would aim for 700-750mm above the table top. This would allow enough space for people sitting at the table to comfortably have a conversation without the light obstructing their vision as well as the right proportion for the space. If placing pendants above a kitchen bench top when its use is more for task lighting, 550-700mm would be the suggested height.

5. One vs two pendants – what works best?

Both! It will depend on your space and the size of your dining table. If you have a larger table and want to create balance and ground the space within your dining area I would suggest 2 pendants of the same size, style and to be placed evenly. If your dining table is on the smaller side one larger pendant or a smaller cluster or 3 pendants will create interest and a focal point within the room.

Besides spring cleaning being top of mind whenever there is a change of seasons, refreshing our dining rooms with new spring-appropriate picks will always pique our interest. And as we move away from the dark and cosy hues of the cooler seasons of autumn and winter and dive into the fun and airy palette of spring and summer, finding dining chairs to match is a task we don’t take lightly (pun intended).

And if you’re blessed with a gorgeous seaside abode (or your home exudes that beachside aesthetic sans the locale), you’ll want to lean into coastal interiors, especially in your dining room.

Photographer: Nic Gossage | Stylist: Lisa Burden

What is a coastal dining room?

Also known as a coastal-themed dining room, a coastal dining room draws design inspiration from sandy beaches and beach houses. So, as Aussies are obsessed with the beach and beachside living, it’s easy to see why coastal interior designs are so popular for Australian homes.

Coastal dining rooms often feature a soft colour palette that includes neutral hues like sandy beige and white and pastel hues like pale blue or seafoam green. Natural materials are also key to this interior style. Think rattan, wicker, wood, and bamboo being motifs in this style.

The best coastal dining chairs in Australia 2023

The dining room, also known as the hub of home (because food brings the family together, after all), is the perfect place to showcase your love for coastal-style interiors. And if you’re looking at your existing dining chairs and hoping to swap them for something more, well, coastal-themed, then you’re at the right place. The post 10 ways to style up your timber dining table appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
You’ve made your choice and invested in a natural timber dining table, the next step is deciding how to style it in your home.

The dining table is where all the action happens at home and whether yours is a contemporary marvel or an heirloom treasure, make a style statement with your furnishings and decorative items that surround it to create a cohesive look.

Scroll down for some stunning dining room spaces, all featuring a timber table as their centrepiece, to provide you with all the inspiration you need to create the entertaining zone (or home office) of your dreams.

1. Mix it up

When dining spaces do double duty, look to incorporate mismatched styles and textures in decor. Situated so close to the kitchen, this timber dining table doubles as a food prep surface. As this dining area becomes a home office, meeting room and meeting place, vintage metal chairs are padded with textural lambswool seats to sit for extended periods, while a pair of bold metallic pendants make a glamorous statement above lush indoor plants. A vintage rug insulates from both the weather and noise.

2. Modern and minimal

In a melange of monochrome, this custom-made American oak table’s rich black stain provides a foil for the vivid artwork. Minimal dining chairs in similar dark tones exhibit clean lines, as does the sharply contemporary chandelier, softened at the tips with warm white glass tubes. Swathes of sheer curtaining extend skyward for added drama.

3. White on white

We love an all-white room and it’s the combination of textures that makes this one work so well. A striking, billowy fabric pendant above the table echoes crisp white walls with a soft touch and a nod to its coastal location, whilst timeless No. 18 chairs are combined with a contemporary banquette seat in white smoked timber.

4. Elegant neutrals

Natural cane dining chairs add a hint of texture to this casual dining room with their hand-woven finish. Drawn up close to a smooth, round timber table, the neutral colour palette is in keeping with the surrounding natural elements of the garden and open-plan living space, while botanical artworks enhance the indoor/outdoor ambience.

5. Moody textures

Suspended above this mid-century modern dining setting is a striking replica George Nelson Saucer Bubble pendant to set the scene, while the stone feature wall highlights the fireplace and references the beachside location. A timber mantlepiece echoes the surface of the vintage table and original artworks carry tonal, neutral colours and introduce more texture still.

6. Timber feature wall

Embrace the warmth of wood with a feature wall lined in timber just beyond your dining area. Particularly in an open-plan setting such as this, it ties everything together and tells a story of timber throughout your entire home.

7. Light and bright

With its soaring white cathedral ceilings and solid French oak flooring, this newly renovated cottage dining room is a drawcard for gatherings with family and friends. While not a large space, situating the dining area so close to the kitchen means everyone remains part of the action.

8. Keep it simple

Sometimes your dining table needs to take a back seat to more decorative elements in the space. Here, restored heritage architectural features such as arches and ceiling roses tell the story above stunning parquetry flooring. Elegant blue upholstered dining chairs are making a statement, so the subtle curve in the sleek dining table is all that’s needed to bring it to the design party.

9. Concrete floors

Awash with natural light, this centrally-located eating zone features flooring that’s both practical and stylish. Polished concrete anchors a monochrome scheme with black window frames, dining table and chairs giving bold strokes to double-height ceilings and 57 pendant lights, staggered above the table to create a breathtaking architectural effect.

10. Contemporary country

For a modern take on country style, evoke an atmosphere of comfort and rest with plenty of tactile layers of natural fabrics and textured walls in the colours of a country sunset. While the round timber table is a bold, contemporary silhouette, gathered foliage is displayed in a time-worn vessel and dusky-hued linens are a nod to the gentle rhythm of country life. The textured pendant takes things up a notch in the style stakes.

Choosing the right lighting over your dining table can make a big difference to the atmosphere you create for meals and entertaining.

1. How do you work the proportions between table vs pendant?
