Your living area should be a welcoming space that can seamlessly adapt to the needs of every family member, all while fostering a sense of comfort and connection. For MAFS star, entrepreneur and author Jules Robinson, her space serves as both a cosy retreat for relaxation and a vibrant hub for hosting friends and family, making it the perfect place for quality family time.

As the mother of two young boys, Jules loves a multifunctional lounge to maximise her space, whether it’s being used for work, play, or socialising. Below are some tips on how to strike a simple balance with flexible layouts, versatile furniture, and thoughtful design elements, so you can create a space that’s as practical as it is inviting.

1. Flexible layouts

Having flexibility in your living room layout is something many families look for. A modular lounge is a popular choice, as it is adaptable, multifunctional, easy to use, and can be reconfigured. The idea is to create an area that you can customise and reconfigure based on your family’s needs, whether that be for special occasions or everyday activities. This adaptability ensures the space stays organised and comfortable, regardless of how the family’s needs may change over time.

Having an open plan layout makes your living room the optimal space for both play and gatherings. “For me, it’s all about creating a warm, effortless atmosphere where family and guests can unwind and have some laughs,” Jules says. It’s important for Jules’ space to accommodate different family activities (playtime, watching TV, eating dinner), so she can enjoy seamless interaction between family and guests, even when different activities are happening simultaneously.

When you have young children like Jules, using modular furniture with built-in storage means that the kids’ toys can be packed away to leave the space open and can be updated based on needs, socialising or the season.

2. Zoned areas

Setting up multiple zones in your living room helps to create a family-friendly space. A few small tweaks can help zone your space, such as adding a rug to pull the room together or hanging a mirror to create different eyelines. Zoning a space helps you create a variety of spaces to entertain, socialise and relax.

“Relaxing on the couch is my go-to most evenings. I love nothing more than chilling, laying down and watching a film or series,” she tells Home Beautiful. Her Amart Sunni lounge can be configured into an L shape, perfect for those cosy weekends in. “In the evening Ollie loves to have a blanket and a cuddle with me on the couch,” she says.

Having a designated play area or nook allows for a creative spot to play, read or create with children and spend quality time together.

Soft furnishings are also a subtle way of making the space feel dynamic. Mixing soft throw blankets, pillows and rugs adds depth and warmth to the space. “They help visually define each zone,” says Jules, as well as being great for tummy tickles!

If you need to work from home during the day, incorporate a small desk in the corner. If it’s separate enough from play zones, it helps to not only minimise distractions, but keeps work separate from family time.

3. Dual-purpose furniture

Incorporating a mix of modular sofas and movable pieces, like armchairs and ottomans which can be rearranged as needed for different-sized guests gives you the flexibility to fill or open your lounge as you please.

Without having to sacrifice your space, the option of a lounge which can be reconfigured into a pull out sofa bed like this Amart Josephine Double Chaise is perfect when family comes to visit, and has the added bonus of storage under both chaise ends (perfect place to stash any errant toys in a hurry). It also makes a cosy snuggling up spot to watch a movie with the whole family.

For Jules, the living area is her haven in the home. Prioritising a peaceful lounge space will create an area you can decompress and relax or cuddle up with loved ones. “I always try and keep this space really tidy and clean so I feel calm and peaceful here,” Jules adds. She maintains this sense of relaxation by using furniture pieces with built-in storage (such as coffee tables or side tables) helping her to store items like blankets, toys, or remote controls, while also offering additional seating or surfaces.

4. Smart lighting

The use of adjustable lighting, such as overhead lights, task lighting and ambient lighting, are simple but effective ways to make a room multifunctional. Whether it’s using mood lights to create a calming ambiance for a family movie, or reading a book with the kids under a lamp in the lounge – lighting plays a huge part of how Jules loves to use her lounge space.

Dimmer switches or colour-changing LED bulbs allow you to adjust the mood. For cosy evenings in, you can bring a warmer, softer feel to the space or brighten up the area when you’re hosting multiple people. Kids also love it when they can play in different light colours like blue, green or purple!

5. Kid-friendly design

When it comes to creating a space for everyone, this also means it needs to be child safe. “We do try to have everything safe and no sharp edges as most of our guests also bring little people with them,” says Jules. Choose furniture with rounded corners or padded edges to prevent any injuries and soft plush rugs to catch tumbles or falls.

To keep kids engaged and stimulated in the space, consider adding playful patterns, bright colours, or fun artwork in some areas to make the space lively and welcoming. Incorporating elements like chalkboard walls, magnetic boards, or a small reading nook, which can all be easily and neatly packed away when needed, can engage children and help to spark their creativity.

Seating, storage or an entirely new zone – it’s all on the cards when revisiting those unused spaces in your home. Here, we show you some sneaky interior design tips from professionals for how to find the perfect living room layout and make the most of your available space.

1. Invest in built-in storage

Integrate custom-built joinery into open zones. This creates a lovely design feature, and books and special objects also add warmth and personality.

2. Adapt areas for more than one use

Double up with inclusions that can multi-task; think retractable pocket doors and bookshelves that provide desk space you can draw a chair up to. Integrated cabinetry is a wonderful way to display an elegant bar area, yet hide the workings and appliances behind closed doors.

3. Divide the space with furniture

The centre of an open-plan zone can provide a display opportunity. Add a piece such as a narrow buffet or console and position it back-to-back with a sofa, which is also a neat look aesthetically.

4. Take the time to plan it out

Consider what you’re aiming to create – maybe you’re trying to put a study nook into a living space or turn a cupboard into a bar – and then think about whether the space has the right credentials, such as ventilation, lighting and positioning. “We take a lot into account – the flooring materials, the skirting and cornice heights, electrical requirements and the current positions,” says designer Louella Woodham of Spaceworks Design. “The height of the end user, potential wear and tear, and structural suitability are all important.”

5. Task an open bookshelf as a zone divider

It’s an instant storage injection within open-plan layouts and provides a nice visual break while welcoming you into the living area.

6. Use the space around fixed architectural features

Chimney breasts, fireplaces and entrance halls all offer space to borrow from for storage and display. “Open shelving in unused space such as above and around doorways is a really practical and space-efficient way to add layers to a room,” says Kate Hardy of Cloth + Stone Designs.

7. Install open shelving

Make the most of your lounge room’s blank walls by adding open shelves and cupboards. Let your book collection take centre stage by colour coding your favourite titles.

8. Add a built-in reading nook

Take the pressure off your sofa by tucking a reading nook in beside a fireplace or under a window. A simple upholstered seat and a collection of coordinated cushions will see it tie in nicely with other furnishings. Bonus points if you can include extra storage under the seat!

When out-of-town family and friends come to stay, there’s always one crucial question to answer before they arrive: where are they going to sleep? The answer: a comfy sofa bed. Buying the best sofa bed for your guests to sleep on is a big decision and there’s a vast selection on the market, so let’s unpack exactly how to find the best sofa bed in Australia to suit your guests and your home.

Ensuring the absolute comfort of your guests is paramount; it’s a matter of manners and hospitality. But so is investing in furniture like a sofa bed that’s durable, useful, stylish and truly a good fit for your home.

Where to place your sofa bed

Consider which room the sofa bed will be located in, who will be using it and even the time of day it will be used. Perhaps the sofa bed will be located in the rumpus room, for example, where, by day, it will be primarily used as a sofa for kids or teens. If so, durability and stain-resistance (or washable covers) should be high on the priority list – after all, if children are about, spilled drinks and ninja kicks are never too far away. If the bed is likely to be used by someone with mobility issues, it should be roomy, supportive and high enough to easily get in and out of – you don’t want your guests feeling cramped, sleep deprived or, worse still, waking up with aches and pains. The bed should also be simple to set up and pack away for you! Finally, it’s essential to think about aesthetics and find a piece that will not disrupt the existing flow or style story of your home.

“Will it mainly be used as a sofa with the bed used infrequently? Or will the bed be set up more regularly?”

James Whitta, VP of product design, Koala

Which is more important, sofa bed comfort or style?

Sofa beds have had a bad reputation in the past, but they’ve come a long way. To guarantee your guests’ comfort, look for models that feature an inner-spring or a memory foam mattress – much more comfortable than a basic foam mattress. A sturdy steel frame is also key. James Whitta, VP of product design at Koala says you need to focus on the sofa bed’s primary use. “Will it mainly be used as a sofa with the bed used infrequently? Or will the bed be set up more regularly?” asks James. “If it’s the latter, and especially if the bed will be used by adults, focus on the comfiest bed rather than the most stylish sofa to ensure your guests enjoy a great night’s sleep.”

Modern sofa bed style

“The days of hiding the ugly sofa or old bed in the spare room are long gone,” says Lounge Lovers stylist Jason Granziera. “The modern sofa bed can make a real style statement and also be comfortable enough to use every day as a sofa or bed. But what you choose as guest bedding must also reflect your personal style and fit harmoniously into the space available.” In short, if it’s not a ‘disappearing’ rollaway, then it needs to look good. With so many configurations, customisations and price points, there’s no need to settle for something you don’t love.

How big should your sofa bed be?

“Consider the scale of the furniture within the space and whether the piece you’re looking at will accommodate one or more people,” explains James. “Think about all options for placement, orientation and its storage capabilities and, crucially, consider the footprint of the bed when it’s fully extended. If you’re choosing a sofa bed, check the dimensions so you know exactly how much room both the sofa and the bed will occupy.”

Pullout sofa beds: High tech or low tech?

Look for a piece that transforms easily in one or two simple movements, and disappears just as simply. You don’t want to be wrangling a difficult contraption or having to seek out extra helping hands or a brains trust. If children are involved, it’s also important to choose a mechanism that is safe for adventurous little fingers. “I recommend low-tech, bi-fold formats because they deliver the easiest set-ups,” says James. “That way you don’t have to fuss with buttons levers or hinges.”

How to clean your sofa bed

Accidents are bound to happen, so removable, washable slipcovers and stain-resistant fabrics are well worth considering. Microfibre, wool and leather are all sensible choices.

How much should a sofa bed cost?

Of course, budget considerations also come into play. Think about how often the bed will be used and the genuine comfort requirements of its primary users. These factors will help determine a ballpark figure you’re prepared to spend. Naturally, you’ll pay more for construction longevity, premium fabric and bespoke size customisation.

How to style your sofa bed

So you’ve found your guest bed. Well done! What’s next? Add fresh, natural linen and pillows in both low and high profiles. Extra cushions, a mattress protector, a lamp and a side table will also ensure your guests feel welcome. A night light in the hall is also always appreciated, as is a carafe of water and glasses next to the bed.

Our top tips:

 1. Style the bedside table with a jug of water and a floral touch
 2. Create space to unpack or spread a blanket at the foot of the bed for five-star polish and to save your linen from soiled suitcases
 3. Add cloud-like comfort with a topper or luxury bedding such as the A.H. Beard ‘Nature’s Rest Verde’ mattress topper from Domayne
 4. Freshen up the room by throwing open the curtains by day and lighting a scented candle at night ahead of evening arrivals
 5. Check linen supplies including towels, pillows (and pillow protectors) and blankets

The coffee table is the unsung hero of your living room – a style anchor. The ultimate in furniture multitasking, its job is to unify the room visually while acting as a footstool, dining table, display surface and storage centre.

It follows that choosing the right one for your living room is not to be underestimated. If you’re stuck for coffee table styling ideas, take cues from its age, material, size and springboard other decorating details from there. Get the style right and everything else will follow.

Want more inspiration? We’ve called in the experts to give their best coffee table styling tips to take your coffee table from zero to the hero of your living room.

The perfect coffee table size

Coffee table styling starts with a great base, so before you begin, consider the perfect coffee table size for your space. “While the styling items are important, the coffee table itself should be the feature in the room not what is on top of it,” says Alice McMullin, Founder & Creative Director at McMullin & co. “Take time to search for a quality, seasonless and contemporary design. It’s always worth the investment.”

It’s all about the right proportions. “Your coffee table has the potential to really finish off a living room, so it should make sense in the space, practically and stylistically,” says Don Garvan, Founder of Totem Road. “A good rule of thumb is to choose a table roughly two-thirds of your sofa’s width. A table too small can get lost, while something too big can overpower the other elements of the room.”

“It’s also important to take note of the height of the table. There’s nothing more awkward than one that’s too high or low,” Alice suggests.

The best shape for your coffee table

If you’re trying to work out why your living room design is not what it should be, start with your coffee table shape. “Rectangle coffee tables are a great choice if you have a narrow space with minimal walk-around clearance, and are best paired with standard or L-shape sofas,” says Don. “Round coffee tables are the most popular choice for family living areas given they don’t have sharp edges.”

“Round coffee tables soften your space and create a gentle flow,” says Ty Symonds, Head Of Design at Country Road. “However, you can lose essential surface area depending on how much you actively use your coffee table. Rectangle coffee tables create more usable surface area and often have great storage capacity too, but they are not great for small spaces.”

Where to place your coffee table

Consider your living room layout – how your move around your living room is vital when choosing your coffee table shape. “Make sure to lead with functionality and then decorate with this in mind to ensure you get the most out of your coffee table,” says Ty. “Storage, ease of cleaning and usable surface area play an important role in how you will live with your coffee table and get the most out of it.”

“If your area allows for a sofa to be placed across from two chairs, opt for a square coffee table, as this creates a symmetrical focal point in the room,” says Don. “Due to the larger surface area, square styles are great if you’re wanting to style further with coffee table books and still have room for your daily necessities.”

The must-have items for coffee table styling

Where to start when styling your coffee table? “Coffee tables can be a small window into your personality; taste; and interests,” says Alice. “While there’s no doubt they’ve become a regular feature in our Instagram, they can be overstyled. They should strike the balance of feeling uncluttered and filled with no more than three – or four – styling pieces.”

“A curious selection of conversation-starting hardcover books – the more diverse and unusual the better. If you’re struggling for inspiration, try digging through your thrift store for atlases or biographies,” Alice suggests. (Photographer: Eve Wilson / Stylist: Beck Simon)

Essential coffee table items

Vases

“Decorative vases are the must-have item for styling your coffee table,” says Ty. “A vase that looks just as good as a decorative object with or without flowers is best. We’re talking vases that aren’t hidden in the cupboard when not in use!”

“Remember to not pick a vase that’s too large [and] will obstruct your view when sitting down,” Fiona warns. “Save those for your sideboards or side tables.”

“Foliage plucked from your yard is a great free styling trick for your favourite vase. It adds a great pop of freshness to any room,” says Fiona.

How much space should styling take up?

Don’t get carried away with your coffee table styling – remember to allow room for practical use and consider all members of your household when choosing objects. “As a general rule, make sure the shapes are bottom-weighted. Coffee tables are notorious for being knocked and bumped so ensure items aren’t top-heavy,” says Ty. “They are definitely not the spot to have your most precious belongings.”

“I find that covering no more than 1/3 of the table is a good balance for me,” says Fiona. “But there are absolutely no rules. If you love a more layered look in your home, then go for it – using a couple of trays and books to ground your pieces will help if going with a ‘more is more’ look.”

How to work with colour on your coffee table

Here’s where the fun begins. Accent with pops of bright colour or keep things nice and neutral – either way, there are a few key tricks to remember. “Keep colour simple. Pick up the base colours in your environment and don’t be afraid to layer with different textures, materials and finishes,” says Ty. “Allow a highlight colour, but remember that less is more and if you have a vase, using flowers to change up colour to your mood is a great way to play with the highlight colour.”

Of course, the need for a coffee table is not always paramount to your living room – functionality has a part to play.

If neutral is your thing, don’t feel you need to go overboard with colour. “Less is always more,” says Alice. “I would lean towards a muted or neutral colour palette that doesn’t command the attention of the room but complements its surroundings. Look for a coffee table that has a light wood grain or a simple dark stain and try to subtly contrast with styling items.”

Shape and form of your coffee table vignette

Use a mix of shapes and sizes of objects for your coffee table, and when in doubt stick to the magic number. “You can never go wrong with the rule of threes when styling your table,” says Fiona. “Three objects, at varying heights, ideally in varying materials to keep it interesting. I love to place one or two coffee table books under one or two of the smaller objects to help ground the look . You could also do this with a tray.”

“Remember the role of the coffee table. Make sure to not overdecorate, and allow enough surface space for daily use such as serving morning and afternoon tea, resting a novel or a notebook,” says Ty.

7 best chaise lounge sofas and chairs to relax on after a long day https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/best-chaise-lounge-australia/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 02:46:54 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/best-chaise-lounge-australia Comfortable seating is our love language.

The post 7 best chaise lounge sofas and chairs to relax on after a long day appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Literally meaning ‘long chair’ in French, modern iterations of the chaise lounge generally come as either a sofa extension (creating the perennially popular L shape), or as a standalone one-person lounge. Either way, the appeal of a chaise lounge is undeniably the way it encourages the user to recline, making relaxation imperative rather than optional. While the freestanding chaise conjures the idea of idle relaxation, the L shape lounge cocoons households, availing them of face-to-face interaction as a by-product of the inward-facing arrangement. In a pinch, a chaise can also double as a guest bed for short-term visitors.

A worthy addition that’s sure to make your living room the cosiest room in your home, a chaise lounge is as much an aesthetic investment as it is a practical addition. However, we understand navigating the myriad of colour, fabric and shape options available, both instore and online, can be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. The Home Beautiful team has handpicked the best of the best when it comes to chaise lounges. Keep reading to discover the pros and cons of this living room staple.

The post Rectangular coffee tables are a humble yet versatile furniture addition that deserves more credit appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Take it from someone who delayed choosing a coffee table for months after we moved into our new apartment…a coffee table is absolutely crucial for any living room. Not only is it a place to pop your favourite beverage and snacks as you watch the latest binge-worthy show, it also serves as an opportunity to showcase coffee table trinkets like coffee table books, artisan vases, magazines, scented candles, and more.

Simply put, a living room feels incomplete without a coffee table, and the months I sat in my lounge without one had me questioning why I didn’t start my shopping journey for one sooner.

With a few near-misses of water glasses balanced on the sofa arm, or worse, having to pause the TV to go to the kitchen to fetch a sip every 20 minutes, I knew I needed to bite the bullet and order a coffee table, stat.

And if you’re like me and you’re serious about choosing the perfect coffee table, this guide will be your saviour. With choices aplenty, a rectangular coffee table is one of my top choices when recommending a coffee table for the modern home. It’s a popular choice for many thanks to its larger surface area and versatile nature (board games night, anyone?).

So, to save you from making the same mistakes I did, I’ve chosen the best rectangular coffee tables on the market in Australia below so you can complete your living room set-up now (rather than later).

9 ways to achieve living room cosiness all year round https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/living-room-ideas/3-ways-to-achieve-living-room-cosiness-all-year-round/ Mon, 13 May 2024 12:51:00 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/3-ways-to-achieve-living-room-cosiness-all-year-round Ready, steady, relax.

The post 9 ways to achieve living room cosiness all year round appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
The living room is often the epicentre of the home so needs to be comfortable, welcoming and most importantly cosy. No matter your household, your living room serves a whole host of purposes, be it a family play zone, an entertaining area or a space to relax and unwind on a night in. It is often one of the spaces where families spend most of their time together, so it is essential to make it work perfectly, no matter how big or small. Here’s the expert’s formula for year-round cosiness.

1. Bring in the layers

Creating instant cosiness is all about getting the right seasonal layers and updating them as the seasons change. For example, in summer, swap dark, heavy cushions for fresher, brighter colours and choose floaty throws in linen and soft blues; in winter go for texture and warmth in your colour palette, with chunky throws and earthy tones.

2. Add texture with flooring

Add texture and warmth to your room with a rug. It keeps your toes nice and warm and retains the heat in a space. If your home is open-plan, use an oversized rug to help frame the living space. For an extra level of comfort and warmth, in-floor heating is a great option, giving you the option to heat each room individually or multiple spaces throughout. So no matter where in the room you are you’ll feel nice and cosy.

3. Install a fireplace

Yes, a fireplace will keep you physically warm in the cooler months but the structure itself has a visual warmth. A fireplace makes a statement and gives the space a focal point, encouraging the layout of your furniture to face towards it and enjoy cosy comfort.

4. Upgrade key furniture pieces

In a small room, resist the temptation to place your sofa along the wall and try bringing it forward. Anchor it with a rug and side table and clear the space behind the sofa to create a clear thoroughfare for a clever and cosy use of space.

5. Find your centrepiece

A feature wall is another great way to add depth and warmth to your living space. Wallpaper? Colour? Timber detailing? It’s up to you and the best part is that by choosing just one show-stopping feature wall to elevate your living room, it’s easier to redecorate it with the latest trends as you tire of the look.

6. Keep it clutter-free

One of the biggest failings in living room decoration is the inadequate storage. There’s nothing warm and cosy about looking at mess and clutter. Look for out-of-the-box storage solutions that keep mess out of sight. Think woven baskets, functional furniture and built-in cupboards.

7. Embrace ‘old meets new’ styling

Don’t be afraid to mix and match some older vintage-style pieces with modern furniture. The curves and textures of older pieces placed together with sleek modern designs create a quirky mismatched feel. Think furnishings, artwork and lighting for an eclectic look.

8. Introduce colour

Switching up your decor is an instant way to transform a room between seasons, but for the pieces that will stick around all year, stick to a consistent colour palette. Make sure you refer back to your base colours when choosing colours and fabrics, choose three or four consistent warm tones.

9. Light it up

Nothing says cosy like a warmly lit space. Avoid using bright LEDs by opting for dimmable lights and add a selection of floor and table lamps to switch on the warm vibes.

8 signs you need to rethink your living room layout https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/living-room-ideas/9-signs-you-need-to-rethink-your-living-room-layout/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 07:08:49 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/9-signs-you-need-to-rethink-your-living-room-layout Living spaces just not working?

The post 8 signs you need to rethink your living room layout appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
If your living spaces are too cramped, too cluttered, untidy or worse – not being used at all, you may need to rethink your living room layout and change things up a little.

Depending on the floorplan of your home, the living room should play an integral part in how you and/or your family use live, work and play there. There are ways to arrange furniture that will make the space flow and ways to arrange furniture that can work against you. Here are our tips for making the space work for you.

1. You feel boxed in

Your sofa is probably the biggest piece of furniture you have and further, is one of the most important investment pieces you will buy. Make sure it pays you back by working hard to bring all of your other pieces together.

Consider “conversation areas” with other furniture, placement under artwork or in relation to the TV and ensure there is plenty of space to move around it.

The goal is to create a living space that feels cosy without being cramped. (Photography: Nic Gossage | Styling: Lisa Burden)

2. Entertainment equipment is taking over

Be realistic about how you use the space. If you watch TV in your living room with your family, set up the furniture so you can do so comfortably.

If this is where gaming takes place, choose furniture that can house all of the technology required and hide it away when not in use.

3. The coffee table is always in the way

A coffee table is a stylish addition to a living space but only if there is sufficient room to accommodate it.

You may be better to opt for smaller side tables positioned next to furniture and moved around if space doesn’t allow for a central larger statement piece. Other items such as your rug or artwork can make a design statement for you.

Grand Hamptons style living room
In a smaller living space, a large, central coffee table may not be necessary. Opt for side tables positioned by furniture or for smaller nesting tables that can be moved around as required. (Photography: Abbie Melle | Styling: Lisa Burden)

4. The rug isn’t the right size

Choosing a rug for your living room is not a decision to be rushed. It’s one of the most important pieces you’ll buy for the space. Colours can change with different lighting and the idea of size and scale of a rug in relation to both your room and other furnishings may also be deceptive until you get it home.

Most rug shops and larger department stores offer a service where you can take home the rug you have in mind to see it in situ – take this chance to see how both the colours and size work in the space and work through the layout options with the rug in hand.

5. There’s stuff on every surface

Wall art and objet d’art can make or break a space and a general rule of thumb is that less is more. One large framed print speaks volumes and is worth the time and trouble of searching for the right piece, rather than filling the space with smaller pieces you are less fond of and that don’t hit the right tone for the living room.

Place bookshelves adjacent to, rather than inside the immediate living space and style it up with a careful edit of objects that are meaningful, rather than cluttering surfaces with impulse items purchased without the space in mind.

6. Not enough storage

Storage is key in such a busy space and must be managed and reconsidered as families grow, lifestyle changes and things build up over time.

Dedicated storage for throws in the warmer months, toys and the paraphernalia of other activities that take place in the family room is the most effective way to ensure your layout works for you.

If you find working in the living room is the best use of your time and space, create an organised nook with stylish storage for stationery and paperwork to keep it clutter free.

7. No real thoroughfare

Arrange furniture so that people don’t need to walk through the conversation area or TV viewing space to get from one side of the room to the other.

Allow adequate seating for people to sit and chat incidentally whilst you prepare meals. Watch how people move through the room and don’t be afraid to try a few different combinations before you get it right.

8. Too many activities

If “a family who plays together stays together” sounds like you, demarcate areas within the living zone for different tasks so that everyone gets their own space.

There’s a limit though – some tasks are better performed away from the group if they’re loud or disruptive. Create an area elsewhere in the home if needs be.

Your living room is a moving feast that serves the comings and goings, rest and relaxation of everyone in the home. Sometimes it shows…

Whether you share your home with others or live alone, your living room is often a springboard for every part of your life and you’ll find it needs a pick-me-up now and then.

If you think it will involve the kind of time you never seem to have spare, here’s a bunch of living room decorating ideas you can do almost instantly (or at least while you watch the latest episode of your favourite binge).

Tip: Set a timer or put on a 60 minute upbeat playlist to stay focused!

1. Restyle your bookshelf

This is a great pick me up, particularly if it’s in plain view of your favourite sitting spot. Revamp a bookshelf with colour-coordinated books, a couple of fresh vignettes or a good cull of your library.

2. Swap out your photos for new ones

Update the snapshots of your life with your latest experiences – take down your frames and refresh them with new snaps of friends, family or your latest holiday and rehang. Perhaps you might like to mix it up with art or textiles to create a salon hang.

3. Wallpaper a feature wall

This one will take a little planning (and perhaps some online shopping, so beware!). Choose to cover a wall or architectural feature that will make an impact:

 • above or below a dado rail or wainscotting
 • the fireplace surround or the recesses either side
 • an angled wall that transitions into another room

Measure up and order sufficient self-adhesive wallpaper to cover the space. When you have it on hand, clear everything away from your wall and prepare and hang it according to the directions.

4. Make yourself a cushion

Embellish or upcycle an older cushion or textile piece to tie in with existing colours or to spark a new palette in the room. Perhaps something that matches your new wallpaper?

5. Rearrange your furniture layout

This is a no-brainer. Rearranging your furniture will not only give the room a lift, it may change the way you use the entire space.

6. Clean out a corner

Go on, get in there!

Corners are often neglected in larger or busy rooms as you walk past or overlook them in your day-to-day life. Take a good look into your living room corners and resolve to say goodbye to boxes, books and/or belongings that have accumulated there over time to become clutter. If things are collecting too often, rethink your storage or furniture layout so items are less likely to gather there.

Pretty and practical: This timeless fabric will elevate your everyday https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/how-wool-elevates-your-everyday/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 23:01:54 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1045528 It's making a comeback for good reason.

Touch is one of our most essential senses. Embracing a friend or a lover is proven to increase the feel-good hormone serotonin in our brains, while the weight of a cosy blanket can boost melatonin levels for a deeper sleep.

The ways things feel can also bring us joy. That’s why it’s important to dress our homes (and ourselves) in beautiful, comfortable fabrics.

Enter: wool, a fabric that’s both pretty and practical. While sheep are mostly associated with wool production, this natural fibre can also come from alpacas and goats, too. This premium material is treasured for its textured appearance, softness, and warmth, as well as its natural insulating abilities.

Below, we share how to bring wool into your home to elevate your everyday.

1. Beautiful bedding

Wool bedding works double duty, as it’s both visually pleasing and ultra-practical. The fabric’s natural wrinkle resistance ensures bed covers are always smooth and presentable, and it lends itself to dyeing in a kaleidoscope of colours to suit every bedroom style.

Wool also has temperature-regulating qualities, which help you stay comfortable for a rejuvenating, deep sleep. Wool fibres trap air to create a warm, insulating layer in cooler seasons, and draw moisture away from your skin to help you cool down in summer. It’s the best of both worlds, so look out for wool quilts to see you through the cold months.

2. Feel-good flooring

When it comes to touch, there’s nothing more calming than sinking your feet into soft carpet. For everyday comfort, bring a timeless wool rug or carpet into relaxation zones like your living area or bedroom.

Find inspiration at Choices Flooring, which has a wide variety of beautiful wool carpets. Windsor Wool Hartsville, for instance, is a crafted loop pile range made from 100 percent wool that’s allergy friendly, stain-resistant, and more durable than synthetic materials due to its natural structure.

The Hartsville range is easy on the eye, too. Gentle neutral hues like deep greys and charcoals allow the wool carpet to blend into any interior style, creating a sense of tranquillity from the ground up.

3. Cosy clothing

Quality materials are essential for long-lasting staples, so clothing made from natural fibres should take pride of place in your wardrobe. Not only does wool feel luxurious and soft on the skin, but the material is also highly wearable.

Merino wool, a thinner fabric from the coats of Merino sheep, is naturally UV absorbing and can provide protection against sunlight, while alpaca fibres are strong, elastic, and tear resistant. Cashmere, the jewel in the crown of wool clothing, is soft to touch and cherished for the fineness of the fibres (which come from cashmere and pashmina goats).

Find daily joy in your clothes by investing in a premium merino, alpaca or wool knit. We have a feeling you’ll treasure it for years to come.

Flooring is one of the most important design decisions in a home. It (literally) lays the foundations for your interiors, enhances comfort, and can make a space more inviting.

One of the best flooring solutions to install at home is a classic wool carpet. Ideal in relaxing lounge areas and bedrooms, wool has a timeless look that outlasts trends and suits every season. Plus, it’s far more than just an attractive choice, as the natural fibres are breathable, hypoallergenic, and temperature-regulating.

For beautiful wool carpet, turn to Choices Flooring’s Windsor Wool range. Designed in stunning natural colour palettes and an array of textures, the range can elevate any room. Here, we round up four wool carpet designs to inspire your next home transformation.

Neutral chic

Keep it simple with Windsor Wool Ristow, a minimalistic wool carpet in a neutral colourway. Effortlessly blending into a variety of home styles — from Hamptons to Japandi — this elegant design pushes striking artwork or sculptural furniture into the spotlight.

Crafted from a hardwearing wool twist blend material, Ristow is extremely durable and naturally resistant to stains — making this timeless design easy on the eyes and even easier to maintain.

Coastal charm

Coastal interior schemes account for far more than seashell décor or ocean blue throw pillows. Above all, seaside homes reflect their laidback surroundings to evoke a sense of tranquillity and relaxation indoors.

Turn your home into a coastal oasis with Windsor Wool Ocean Isle, a level loop pile carpet designed in six neutral shades inspired by the versatile colours of sand. Made using New Zealand wool, this beautiful carpet is incredibly soft, naturally insulating, hypoallergenic and resistant to stains.

Cottagecore aesthetic

The cottagecore aesthetic isn’t going anywhere, as homeowners continue to embrace simple living and decorate with floral textiles, natural materials and whimsical objects. Take cottagecore style a step further with Windsor Wool Cotter River carpet.

Crafted from natural fibres, this stunning wool carpet can bring a rustic, country look to every room from the ground up. The acoustic properties of wool absorb noise, while the cushioning effect of wool fibres adds an extra layer of softness for a quiet and comfortable cottage-style home.

Modern beauty

Testament to the power of colour and texture, Windsor Wool Astoni carpet is both visually pleasing and plush underfoot. It’s worth the investment; this chunky loop pile carpet is made from 100 percent wool and designed in seven nature-inspired hues.

Best suited to modern interiors (think sleek and clean lines, a monochromatic palette and uncluttered style), Astoni wool carpet proves that there’s no need to sacrifice style for comfort.

Carpet versus hard flooring: the pros, challenges and best solutions for each room https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/carpet-versus-hard-flooring/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 22:59:24 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1045215 How to get your foundations right.

We all want a dream house that ticks all boxes – is timeless in style, complements our interior scheme or makes a wow impact, can take the motherload of footfall from toddler to teen, and won’t require ample time and elbow grease to maintain. And then there’s the budget. Flooring consumes a large portion of the interior budget and is the foundation for your interior colour palette – so there’s a natural pressure to make the right choices.

Now the good news: there are ample options to choose from, and the perfect flooring finish that will tick all your requirements is out there (we promise!). Here, we lay out the best flooring solutions for each room, keeping aesthetics, purpose and practical benefits front of mind.

Soft flooring: Carpet

Carpets offer a sense of comfort and warmth; a soft, plush cushioning surface you can sink your toes into. And, due to the extensive colours, textures, fibres and patterns, carpet can also significantly enhance your interior aesthetic.

From a practical perspective, carpet (particularly wool carpet) works as an insulator, retaining warmth in winter and is cooler in summer. It also helps reduces noise, cushions the ground as you walk, provides a safer, non-slip surface, and can improve indoor air quality by trapping allergens and dust. That said, carpets need regular vacuuming and cleaning.

Carpets have come a long way in recent years. Today, you can choose from a range of materials to suit your lifestyle requirements and budget including wool carpets, nylon, asthma- and pet-friendly products, with myriad low-maintenance and durable options and of course, luxurious finishes that elevate your interior. There’s also a diverse selection of styles, from plush to looped and textured or twisted, and in a plethora of colours to suit just about every interior style.

Natural wool has become a home favourite, thanks to its timelessness, durability, stain-resistance, insulating properties, luxe feel and the general trend towards choosing natural fibres. But many nylon and synthetic options are high-tech and just as aesthetically appealing.

Choices Flooring have a wide range of carpet styles, fabrics and colours available, including Wool carpet, Nylon carpet and Asthma-friendly carpet. Featured: Windsor Wool Clayfield Moonless Night, available at Choices Flooring.

When it comes to rooms, high-quality and durable carpets are versatile and can largely be used in any room, but more commonly appear in bedrooms and living rooms, as opposed to high-traffic hallways.

Hard flooring: Laminate and Timber

You are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to hard surfaces. The two most popular choices are laminates and timber.

Today’s laminate ranges mimic the natural materials they are based on, with timber, stone, tiles and other hard surfaces all available. Laminate timber lookalikes can include planks, natural knots, patterns, textures and colours that make them look just like the real thing. Laminates come in a range of designs suitable for every lifestyle including asthma-friendly collections, family-friendly finishes, and even options that soften acoustics, enhance durability and make maintenance a breeze.

Laminate floors tend to be easier to maintain than solid timber floorboards, with water-resistant and non-porous finishes, anti-static properties and easy plank replacements. And they are less expensive than natural materials.

They are perfect for high foot-traffic hallways, kitchens and kids’ or entertainment rooms. Tile laminates are also a great budget-friendly alternative to natural stone, achieving the marble or stone (or timber) aesthetic, minus the cost.

Timber floors or hardwood floors are made from solid wood (or hybrid, with a thin hardwood veneer atop engineered wood planks), which really showcase the natural beauty.

From an aesthetic perspective, timber floorboards are timeless, add warmth and a luxurious vibe, often becoming the interior showpiece themselves. But they are more expensive and can require maintenance.

Luxury vinyl flooring is another popular option that is low maintenance, easy to install, budget-friendly, quiet to walk on and super stylish.

The most important thing you can do is take your time before making a decision. Flooring is a big investment, so choosing carefully for your lifestyle needs, budget and aesthetic requirements is key to living happily ever after. If in doubt, speak to the experts.

After living in their heritage-style Mosman home for six years, a Sydney family of four was aware of the shortcomings of the build – namely its lack of functionality and dated finishes. Keen to create a place they truly loved, which would suit their needs for the next decade and beyond, they decided to renovate.

When their preferred builder had an opening in 2021, they swiftly moved out and launched into construction mode, but six months in they were overwhelmed by a mountain of design decisions.

In need of more expert help, they reached out to Home By Belle. The team, led by founder Sarah Comerford and design director Erica Georgis, took the reins, devising an improved layout and reimagining the interior fit-out top to bottom.

The reno journey

Who? A professional couple with two children.

Where? Mosman, on Sydney’s North Shore.

Original property: A two-level inter-war Federation bungalow.

Time frame? The project took 14 months and was completed in March 2022.

Why this house? With a second child on the way, the owners wanted a home that could accommodate the family for years to come.

Why the reno? They wanted to improve the layout to create a functional, timeless home.

Must-haves? Creating a new kitchen that suits entertaining, adding more light and relocating the laundry so it could function as a mudroom.

The works: The roof was retiled, 60sqm was added upstairs, and the downstairs layout was reconfigured.

Favourite aspect? “I love sitting in the formal living area. It’s cosy in front of the fireplace,” says the homeowner.

Living area

Originally a combined living and dining room, the owners never used the space for sit-down meals, so opted for one large open-plan lounge. “We used furniture to zone it into a kids’ TV lounge at one end, with the other side devoted to a formal sitting area,” explains Erica.

To create a cosy focal point, the existing fireplace was enhanced with heritage-inspired mouldings and a mantel topped with an artwork by Claire Stapleton titled Stranger Things Have Happened. The use of a sleek, dramatically veined marble-look surround is part of a thread of contemporary black accents seen throughout the house.

Kitchen

The original outdated kitchen was small and lacked storage, which hampered the keen home cooks and entertainers. “The solution was to reconfigure the location of the lounge and dining areas, enabling the kitchen to double in size and accommodate a large island bench, concealed butler’s pantry and abundant storage,” explains Erica, of the sleek joinery in Polytec Black Woodmatt.

“I love that when I’m in the kitchen, I can see the kids in the pool,” enthuses the homeowner. A restrained black-and-white scheme directs the eye to carefully chosen artworks: Noodles, Oodles & Spoodles by Anna Curnuck and Girl with a Pony by Claire Stapleton, both from Sibu Gallery in Sydney.

Luxury kitchen details

Gold details: “We incorporated the owner’s love of gold,” explains Erica, of the brass accent band, which highlights the perimeter of the back bench and also underscores the integrated rangehood. A touch of brass was also added with hardware from Lo & Co, which helped balance the dark cabinetry.

Curved island: A welcome addition in the extended kitchen was a generous 1.4m x 2.9m island, designed as a functional and sculptural centrepiece. The island features sweeping timber panelling, which accentuates the lines of the curved top. It’s teamed with stools from Life Interiors.

Dining room

Previously a living area, this space off from the kitchen was converted into a designated dining area for family meals and entertaining. “To add subtle interest and elevate the zone, we clad one wall in Porta Contours ‘Pinnacle’ lining board painted to match surrounding walls in Dulux Natural White, and installed a large custom mirror, which enhanced the sense of space and light in the room and reflected views of the pool,” explains Erica.

To maximise storage, a custom sideboard, punctuated with statement black handles, was designed and produced by Home By Belle. In keeping with the darker neutral scheme, the table was sourced from Easterly Living and paired with Coco Republic chairs.

In awe of the complete transformation, the owners reflect that it’s been wonderful to return to the same place, which now embodies the look, feel and functionality they’d always dreamt of. “The opportunity to experience the house as if it was new again has been a privilege,” says the homeowner.

Oak floorboards

Existing floor coverings were replaced on both the lower and upper level with Grand Oak Monarch Collection flooring in Driftwood from Grand Oak Flooring. To ensure it didn’t have a slight bouncing feel underfoot, the Home By Belle team specified a direct stick installation.

Guest bedroom

A guest room is a new addition on the upper level. “Rather than putting art on the walls, the winged bed in a velvet fabric creates the feature in the space,” says Erica of the focal piece from Darcy & Duke, teamed with bedlinen from Sheridan.

A bedside table and lamp, both from Globe West, round out the furnishings while flowers add a fresh and pretty touch.

Best advice

Choosing a beautiful material and using it in many areas reduces the number of design decisions during a renovation and creates a unified, consistent palette. The luxurious appearance of natural marble, coupled with the easy care and durability of engineered stone, inspired the use of Talostone ‘Calacatta Luxe’ in all wet areas. “It’s available in large slabs, so it was ideal as a seamless surface across benchtops and splashbacks,” says Erica.

Main bathroom

Part of the newly extended footprint on the upper level, the main bathroom presented a blank canvas to create a serene wet area. “The plans already had the window in place, so it made sense to locate a freestanding bath below it and devote that end of the room to a wet zone and include a shower contained behind frameless glass,” says Sarah, of the freestanding ‘Rottnest’ bath and black tapware from Industrie Tapware.

Lessons learnt

A renovation is a marathon not a sprint. Although construction began in early 2021, when Home By Belle came on board midway through the build and suggested a structural change to improve the layout, the new plan had to be submitted to council and approved, which slowed progress. Despite the hold-up, the homeowners agree the transformative effect was well worth the wait and are grateful for the professionals they engaged.

Ensuite

The homeowners wanted an ensuite for their daughter to help serve as a refuge during teenage years. “Flat finger white gloss tiles frame the vanity and break up the larger format marble-look Mamo Grigio patterned tiles used below and across the floor,” explains Erica of the Industrie Tapware tiles.

Powder room

Floor-to-ceiling Bianco Carrara Marble Chevron mosaic tiles from Industrie Tapware complemented by a vanity accented in brass, and linear ‘Maddox’ pendant from Cafe Lighting & Living add wow factor.

Laundry

Functionality reigns in the relocated laundry, which doubles as a stylish mudroom. “An external door was added to serve as a side entrance to the house, where the kids can drop their schoolbags and take off their shoes,” explains Erica, of the drop zone with seating and hooks tucked behind the washer and dryer. Custom joinery provides storage and conceals a laundry chute which is a well-loved and used addition.

How to create a wabi sabi inspired living room https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/wabi-sabi-inspired-decorating/ Mon, 17 Jul 2023 07:08:47 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1043730 Find beauty in the perfectly imperfect.

The post How to create a wabi sabi inspired living room appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
“Wabi sabi is an acceptance and appreciation of the impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete nature of everything,” writes Japanologist Beth Kempton in her book, Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life.

Pronounced ‘wah-bi sah-bi’, the concept originated thousands of years ago in Japanese tea ceremonies, which embrace natural and rustic materials, simplicity, and patience.

Now, the ancient philosophy also extends to interiors.

Wabi sabi design celebrates natural beauty and imperfection. There is no place for curated shelves, flawless décor, mass-produced furniture, or synthetic materials. Instead, think sentimental keepsakes, minimal styling, and a colour scheme inspired by nature.

Bring this soothing style into your own home with these wabi sabi inspired decorating tips.

1. Less is more

Take a minimalist and less-is-more approach to your interiors, stripping away all that is unnecessary. For essential items that create visual clutter, invest in beautiful or nifty storage solutions like rattan baskets or a sofa with hidden storage compartments.

“Wabi sabi teaches us to be content with less in a way that feels like more. Less stuff, more soul. Less hustle, more ease. Less chaos, more calm. Less mass consumption and more unique creation,” explains Kempton.

2. Create a natural colour palette

The easiest way to channel wabi sabi style? Create an understated, nature-inspired colour scheme. Ocean blue and forest green hues, and earthy shades like terracotta and oak, work in harmony to cultivate a sense of peace at home.

Start from the ground up with Choices Flooring’s Genero Grove vinyl planks. Inspired by Australian species and oaks, Genaro Grove is available in a range of colours like Tassie Oak, Bleached Driftwood, and Coastal Spotted Gum. The planks are also durable, easy to clean, and suitable for underfloor heating to keep you cosy underfoot.

3. Embrace biophilic design

Wabi sabi style is synonymous with biophilic design, which invites the natural world into the home. Bring the outside in with an abundance of sunlight (install a skylight if this is lacking in your living area), hand-picked foliage, and bouquets of flowers.

Florist Kowsh Rawson of Kiko Design says: “My ideal way of channelling wabi sabi through floral arrangements is through minimal and simplistic design. The arrangement needs to form an aesthetic that is harmonious and sensitive.”

“Keep it simple with the use of a single variety,” Kowsh advises. “Follow the lines and the shape of each individual stem, arranging thoughtfully and intentionally to ensure that each flower or branch has its own space and presence.”

“Creating in odd numbers can help to create a sculptural arrangement that is naturally pleasing to the eye,” says Kowsh Rawson. (Credit: Photo: @kikodesign/Instagram.com)

4. Treasure handmade pieces

“Avoid the purchase of plastics or synthetic materials and opt for furnishing that features an artisanal factor. These don’t always have to be brand new or need to come with a hefty price tag,” Kowsh suggests.

If you need something new, trawl antique shops and second-hand markets, look for handcrafted ceramics, or hold onto personal pieces that tell a story. In the living room, you can frame handwritten cards from your loved ones, display treasures collected on your travels, or fill shelves with your favourite books.

“If you’re looking to slowly introduce wabi sabi into small practices, I love a handmade ceramic coffee cup — perfect for your early morning coffee ritual,” the florist says.

5. Repurpose and upcycle items

In the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi, people repair broken objects with gold lacquer. This seals the cracks and makes the object more unique and appealing.

Apply this approach to your own home by repairing, repurposing, and upcycling time-worn or damaged items. Admire the patina on your leather lounge; appreciate the story behind the coffee ring stains on your side table; and embrace flaws.

It’s not easy to get your living room looking like the pages of a magazine. There are so many elements that need to come together to get the look just right.

If your lounge room is looking less than lovely and you’re stuck on just what it is that’s not working well, take a look through this checklist from former HB editor Sarah Burman and stylist Fiona Gould for where you may be missing the mark.

1. No natural touches

A little greenery goes a long way in the living room and even if you’re not a green thumb, an indoor plant, bunch of fresh flowers will literally breathe life into the room. “Pick some fresh greenery from your yard and display in vases around the house,” Fiona suggests.

“They instantly make the home feel fresh and organised.”

2. Too much clutter

“Stylish storage baskets and boxes are key for keeping the clutter out of sight,” says Fiona.

Imagine you’re selling your home and want to present it in the best possible light to potential buyers by clearing the decks and hiding the mess and collected clutter of daily life. Why not present it this way all the time for your own enjoyment?

3. Dirty surfaces

Even if your cleaning is on point, but particularly if housekeeping is not a priority, Fiona suggests avoiding buying coffee tables and dining tables with glass tops.

“You will forever be cleaning away the finger prints,” she warns.

4. No texture

Style up your sofa with textured linen throws to bring interest and depth to your decorating.

Natural linen is especially beautiful as it looks even better when it’s a little crushed. “It’s meant to have an organic messy look about it so crinkles and a rushed drape on the sofa is welcomed,” says Fiona.

5. Shopping straight from the showroom

Avoid choosing pieces all in the same style or you’ll be left with a showroom feel. Instead, combine items from different styles or eras, with a mix of some old and new, for a look that feels authentic and balanced.

6. Karate chopping your cushions

Now a tell-tale sign of dated interior decorating, HB editor Sarah advises steering clear of this once-loved method of sofa presentation. “It’s too stuffy!” she warns.

7. Visible power cords and TV cables

One of the things that can quickly make your house look ugly is the spaghetti salad of cords and cables running hither and thither around walls and under footed furnishing. “Hide those cables!” says Sarah.

“Inside the walls if possible. Embrace wireless technology wherever you can in the home for a more streamlined look.”

8. Your rug is the wrong size

“Picking the right rug for your space is vital,” says Fiona. “Too small and it will feel dwarfed and awkward, too big and the room can feel cluttered. The perfect size is approx 30cm underneath your sofa and armchairs so that everything sits on top comfortably.”

9. Too many cushions on your sofa

Rather than working as beautiful decor pieces, overloading your sofa with too many cushions can really make the space feel too busy and messy. “Stick to two per corner or three in one corner for a more considered look,” Fiona advises.

The coffee table is the unsung hero of your living room; a style anchor. The ultimate in furniture multitasking, its job is to unify the room visually, whilst acting as a footstool, dining table, display surface and storage centre.

It follows that choosing the right one for your living room is not a task to be underestimated. If you’re stuck for coffee table styling ideas, take cues from its age, material, size and springboard other decorating details from there – get the style right and everything else will follow.

Want more inspiration? We’ve called in the experts to give their best coffee table styling tips to take your coffee table from zero to the hero of your living room.

It’s all in the details. Like the carefully curated display in this classic living room.

The perfect coffee table size

Coffee table styling starts with a great base so before you begin, consider the perfect coffee table size for your space.

“Your coffee table has the potential to really finish off a living room so it should make sense in the space, practically and stylistically,” says Don Garvan, Founder of Totem Road. “A good rule of thumb is to choose a table roughly two-thirds of your sofa’s width. A table too small can get lost, while something too big can overpower the other elements of the room.”

“It’s also important to take note of the height of the table, there’s nothing more awkward than one that’s too high or low,” Alice suggests.

It’s all about shape and proportion as seen in this mid-century modern living room.

The best shape for your coffee table

If you’re trying to work out why your living room design is not what it should be, start with your coffee table shape. “Rectangle coffee tables are a great choice if you have a narrow space with minimal walk-around clearance and are best paired with standard or L-shape sofas,” says Don. “Round Coffee Tables are the most popular choice for family living areas given they don’t have sharp edges.”

“Round coffee tables soften your space and create a gentle flow,” says Ty Symonds, Head Of Design at Country Road. “However you can lose essential surface area depending on how much you actively use your coffee table.

“If your area allows for a sofa to be placed across from two chairs, opt for a Square Coffee Table as this creates a symmetrical focal point in the room,” says Don.

“While there’s no doubt they’ve become a regular feature in our Instagram, they can be over-styled.

Visit this stylish weekend here.

Our experts believe in a few essential items:

Vases

“Decorative vases are the must-have item for styling your coffee table,” says Ty. “A vase that looks just as good as a decorative object with or without flowers is best. We’re talking vases that aren’t hidden in the cupboard when not in use!”

“Remember to not pick a vase that’s too large that it will obstruct your view when sitting down,” Fiona warns. “Save those for your sideboards or side tables.”

Tip: “Foliage plucked from your yard is a great free styling trick for your favourite vase, it adds a great pop of freshness to any room,” says Fiona.

Coffee table books

“A must for styling most spaces, but especially a coffee table,” says Fiona Gould, Interior stylist and founder of Chelon Design. “They help to ground your other accessories and add varying layers of heights to your styling, but also I like to think of books as art for the table – they’re a great way to introduce certain character and colour to your table.”

“Stack your favourite coffee table books, layer on a vase, a candle and a decorative dish,” Ty suggests. “Try to group in odd numbers like 3 and allow for varying heights for a harmonious vignette. Avoid decorative objects that become dust collectors and try to be as purposeful and functional with the items you choose.”

Candles

Scented candles are a great way to combine fragrance and style in your living room. With an ever-changing offering of decorative shapes and gorgeous vessels hitting shelves, there’s something to indulge every decorating style.

Coasters

Functional and beautiful, coasters do double duty on the coffee table. “Often we forget the primary purpose of coffee tables lies squarely in its name,” says Ty, who is working on launching and developing a limited selection of sculptural chrome coasters – watch this space.

How much space should styling take up?

Don’t get carried away with your coffee table styling – remember to allow room for practical use and consider all members of your household when choosing objects. “As a general rule, make sure the shapes are bottom-weighted, coffee tables are notorious for being knocked and bumped so ensure items aren’t top-heavy,” says Ty. “They are definitely not the spot to have your most precious belongings.”

“I find that covering no more than 1/3 of the table is a good balance for me,” says Fiona. “But there are absolutely no rules. If you love a more layered look in your home then go for it – using a couple of trays and books to ground your pieces will help if going with a more is more look.”

“Allow a highlight colour, but remember less is more and if you have a vase, using flowers to change up colour to your mood is a great way to play with the highlight colour.”

If neutral is your thing, don’t feel you need to go overboard with colour. “Less is always more,” says Alice. “I would lean towards a muted or neutral colour pallet that doesn’t command the attention of the room but compliments its surroundings. Look for a coffee table that has a light wood grain or a simple dark stain and try to subtly contrast with styling items.”

Shape and form of your coffee table vignette

Use a mixture of shapes and sizes of objects for your coffee table and when in doubt, stick to the magic number. “You can never go wrong with the rule of threes when styling your table,” says Fiona. “Three objects, at varying heights, ideally in varying materials to keep it interesting. I love to place 1-2 coffee table books under 1 or 2 of the smaller objects to help ground the look – you could also do this with a tray.”

“Remember the role of the coffee table, make sure to not over decorate and allow enough surface space for daily use such as serving morning and afternoon tea, resting a novel or a notebook,” says Ty.

This new Samsung TV will reinvent your viewing experience https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/living-room-ideas/samsung-the-frame-tv-24026/ Wed, 14 Sep 2022 22:50:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/samsung-the-frame-tv-24026 Bigger, better, brighter, smarter…

The post This new Samsung TV will reinvent your viewing experience appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Whether you’re a news junkie, sports fanatic or just love sinking your teeth into a good home renovation series, the TV will play a starring role in your viewing experience. But for any aesthetically minded person, this black rectangular frame has often been an eyesore against their meticulously designed and curated spaces.

And for years interior designers and creative homeowners alike have contemplated ways to conceal their TVs. The good news? Samsung’s new ‘The Frame’ solves the problem – not only matching your home’s aesthetic but elevating it (and your viewing experience too).

Here’s why Samsung’s The Frame TV is the aesthetic masterpiece you didn’t know you needed.

The View

The Frame TV has everything you could expect from a Smart TV of its calibre – crystal clear resolution, premium sound, and of course, a larger display. But it’s also beautiful. Boasting clean-cut lines and a sleek design, perhaps the most impressive thing about it (for interior lovers anyway) is that it doesn’t even look like a TV – and that’s the whole point.

Artwork & Designer Credentials

Designed to double as décor, the Frame TV is true to its name and looks exactly like, well, a picture frame and can project over 1,600 paintings, photographs, and art pieces when not in use, giving your home that sophisticated edge many of us crave.

Designed to fit in with a modern open-plan room, The Frame TV looks like a piece of Art when not in use.

The Skinny

While no longer the big and bulky boxes they once were, even the thinnest television can be a distraction in any room, whether it’s on or off. But thanks to The Frame you don’t have to worry about your television stealing all the attention as it transforms into an ever-changing canvas, featuring still, life, patterns, and architecture.

Sensory Ideas

The television also features a brightness sensor that adjusts the image according to the amount of light in the room, ensuring the digitized version closely resembles that of the image. And like most fine art, the TV comes complete with a fine frame too. Encased in black, white, or wood veneer, the TV can also be customised with interchangeable frames so you can switch up the look and feel of your spaces in an instant – no overhaul necessary. Better yet, you can also match it with the ultra slim Soundbar to get the most out of your viewing experience.

Future Tech

As simple and stylish as the Frame is, it’s also packed with a slew of new tech features that will take your viewing experience to the next level. The display has Samsung’s QLED Quantum Dot Technology that offers bright colours and impressive contrasts. This is further enhanced by the Frame’s new Anti-Glare Matte Display which is designed to catch the light and scatter it across the display’s surface so that reflections on the screen are severely minimised.

Brought to you by the National Product Review.

The affordable way to a brand new sofa https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/living-room-ideas/the-affordable-way-to-a-brand-new-sofa-22687/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/the-affordable-way-to-a-brand-new-sofa-22687 These sofa hacks will pave the way to a brand new statement piece - for half the cost of buying one!

The post The affordable way to a brand new sofa appeared first on Home Beautiful.

If you love your sofa but it’s starting to show signs of wear and tear, give it an instant lift for a fraction of the price of a new one by replacing the fabric cover. Options range from off-the-shelf loose covers to custom-made covers retro-fitted by a specialist, to a fully upholstered fabric makeover. All options represent an affordable way to revive your sofa with a fresh new look.

A loose cover that you can wash again and again is particularly helpful if you expect that your sofa will continue to experience the same wear and tear in future with, for example, kids or animals in the house.

Big retailers such as IKEA and Freedom include sofas in their furniture ranges that come with a loose cover that can be removed for easy cleaning and/or replaced down the track for as little as $99.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match sofas if only one needs a new cover, as seen in this coastal living room.

What is the average life expectancy of a sofa?

The life expectancy of your sofa depends on two things: the build quality and the amount of wear and tear it receives, so a sofa in a seldom-used lounge room or study will last longer than the main family sofa that everyone piles onto daily.

When making the decision to purchase a sofa, be guided by the manufacturer’s guarantee, which will indicate how long they expect it to last with normal use. Mass-produced sofas that come off a production line in the hundreds are machine-made with less attention to detail and often use cheaper materials in the frame construction and fabric, so maybe only be guaranteed for 12 months.

What type of sofas last the longest?

A sofa made by hand in Australia will usually last longer and, as such comes with a guarantee of workmanship – often up to 10 years. If you have invested in a good quality sofa and take care of it, your sofa can potentially outlive the guarantee. It, therefore, makes sense to recover it down the track as the structure is more likely to last through a makeover. That said, a new slipcover is the classic IKEA sofa hack for a more affordable model that can extend its lifetime if the cushions are still in good shape.

Buy once, buy well. A custom-made sofa, like the Harbro ‘Doug’ modular sofa as seen in this heritage cottage renovation, can be specified and hand-made for your needs, then recovered by the manufacturer time and again as the build quality will stand the test of time.

How to renew a fabric sofa

If your sofa came with a loose cover, removing it to wash is a simple process. Not all covers are suitable for throwing into the washing machine, however, so check the washing instructions on covers before you buy them and follow instructions on the care label if you do wash them. Seat cushions may wash well at home, whereas the sofa cover itself may require an industrial-sized washing machine. Alternatively, a dry cleaner can refresh your sofa for as little as $150 for a 3-seater, which is a fraction of the cost of a new sofa and our all-time favourite sofa hack to give a ‘brand new’ feeling to your biggest furniture investment.

A new cover is within reach at a range of price points. “Loose covers are great when frames are in good condition and don’t require internal work to your item,” says Derek Martin, owner oft Inform Upholstery. It’s also the perfect solution for a short-term or seasonal pick-me-up to add a little extra warmth or colour to your living room. Your linen sofa may be perfect during the summer months, but there’s nothing like the appeal of velvet or wool during winter.

The next best thing to having your sofa fully reupholstered is to have a cover custom made to fit – a great resolution when your sofa is in sound condition in terms of build but has staining or fading that lessens its appeal. “Loose or removable covers are a great way to keep your fabrics looking new and fresh, we highly recommend them,” says Derek. “It’s not fixed permanently to your sofa so can have slight movement, but we can tailor it to make the item appear upholstered.” Replacement legs for IKEA sofas are also readily available in a range of styles to revamp the look.

Made-to-measure covers are removable for cleaning and can be easily changed to a new cover. In terms of timing, Derek says it can take from hours to one or two days from start to finish, depending on the style of your sofa.

How much does a sofa cover cost?

Do your research. The size of your sofa, whether you choose off-the-rack or custom covers and your choice of material can make a massive difference in pricing. Set a budget for your old couch renovation and work backwards from there.

If possible, chat to the manufacturer to gauge the amount of fabric required to recover it, or compare a similar sofa online for approximate measurements.

Using a three-seat sofa as a guide, expect to pay from $800-$850 for polyester, corduroy and lower-cost fabrics, and for wool, cotton and linen from $950-$1000 upwards, depending on the style and size of your sofa. Consider that an average three-seat sofa with separate seat cushions will use in excess of 20 metres of fabric, so a premium choice can quickly chew up your budget. Most manufacturers work to a template or pattern so many, like King Living will refit timeless styles in a new fabric at a range of price points.

How often should you clean your couch?

A weekly vacuum all over will remove dust and pesky feathers to extend the life of your fabric sofa and is also the best way to clean a leather couch. Remove the cushions and pull it away from the wall for a good clean along the backrest.

Spot clean spills and stains immediately after they happen and consider a protective coating when your purchase the sofa and following each wash.

An annual clean by a fabric specialist is recommended to maintain your sofa and stay ahead of the build-up of stains. Be aware of the position of your sofa in relation to direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Top tips for keeping your sofa looking beautiful

 • Professional cleaning is recommended unless otherwise stated on the fabric tag

 • Safeguard your sofa with a good fabric protector, such as Scotchgard to repel liquids and block stains. Apply two light coats, rather than one heavy coat, allowing to dry in between each coat.

 • Spot clean spills and accidents immediately with an upholstery shampoo

With its faux-Mediterranean palette of wrought iron and apricot tones, this was not an easy home to fall in love with. Still, returning to her native Perth, interior designer Natalee and her husband Mark were keen to find a property on which they could make their mark – and she saw the potential.

“It was just hideous, but as we walked through we could see the waterfront,” says Natalee, a mother-of-three and James Hardie Scyon ambassador. “It was the water that got us!” With its location next to a marina, the home’s worst design crime was the way it turned its back on the water. Solid walls on the marina side made the interior gloomy, so the formal living and dining room was high on the list of must-renovate spaces. Taking a breezy approach, it is now a bright haven of Hamptons style.

Original room: A formal living and dining zone.

Time frame: Eight weeks.

Why the makeover? The room felt dated, and despite soaring ceilings and windows, sunlight was blocked by external shutters.

The works: The first step was filling in a sunken lounge and removing a nib wall between the front door and living room. The mezzanine level was extended and squared off, while round columns were replaced by square-panelled newel posts. The external shutters were binned in favour of internal ones, and new window architraves and timber flooring were installed throughout the home.

Major changes: Switching the gloomy decor to Natalee’s signature Hamptons style flooded the area with light.

Lessons learned: Natalee and husband Mark were apprehensive about extending the top mezzanine floor. But she says, “It was the best thing we ever did! It not only created extra floor space upstairs, but also an incredible void, which is now a gorgeous feature in our home.”

Dining area

Connected to the living room, the dining space is designed to feel special. Natalee set about achieving an upmarket look with a duck-egg blue grasscloth wall covering from Boyd Blue. “We then brought out that colour in the cushions in the living room, so the flow was very easy on the eye,” she says. Crystal drop lights hang above a restored antique American oak table that’s bookended by grand carvers, while the custom chairs can be changed up with slip covers – all are available through Indah Island. Newly laid American oak floorboards add a warm base.

Front door

The custom door with wrought-iron inserts is from Cedar West. “It’s about providing wow-factor when you walk in,” says Natalee. The spindle chairs and cushions are available through Indah Island.
