Which bed frames are the strongest?

Bed frames can be made up of a combination of materials. Choosing a bed frame that is well constructed from durable materials will be key in finding one that will last you a long time.

These are the most common materials usually found in bedframes:

 • Wood
 • Metal
 • Fabric

All of which are great materials when looking for a bed frame. Thick wooden or metal bases are durable and prevent your mattress from sagging. Upholstered bed frames add warmth and texture to your room while providing extra comfort – especially if you often sit up and read from your bed. Bed frames with upholstered bed heads are often filled with foam and fibre for extra cushioning.

Choosing the material from which your bed frame is made is personal. However, if you’re looking for one that is sturdy and strong – opting for a bed frame made from durable metal like steel is an excellent choice. Along with this, look out for a bed frame with a good amount of slats – in other words, it shouldn’t look sparse, and the gaps between the slats are no bigger than seven centimetres.

How much should I spend on a good bed frame?

The price of a bed frame can vary. But generally, you should expect to spend around $1000 – $1500. More luxurious models can be upwards of $2000.

Are bunk beds safe?

Bunk beds are a safe sleeping option as long as they are designed and used safely.

Luckily, all bunk beds sold in Australia have to comply with the national safety standards, which require the top bunk to have guardrails and that the gaps between guardrails are 3.5 inches or less.

It’s also worth noting that the Red Nose Foundation recommends that children shouldn’t use the top bunk before the age of 9.

It’s also a good idea to place the bunk beds in the corner of the room, making the most of the support from the walls on either side.

Other safety measures include placing a nightlight near the ladder and, most importantly, educating your children about bunk bed safety and not letting them play on the top bunk of the bed.

How much weight can a bunk bed hold?

The weight that a bunk bed can hold really depends on an individual bed’s design and the construction materials used to make it.

However, most bunk beds will support 80kg on the top bunk and at least 160kg on the lower.

The best way to check is to refer to your bunk bed’s manual.

Butter yellow is the colour of spring/summer 2024-25. We’re predicting it’ll be everywhere, from fashion looks to homewares, just like Unexpected Red. “Celebrities from Rihanna to Hailey Bieber have been sporting this hue lately, helping drive its popularity in fashion. We also saw a lot of butter yellow tones in the latest season of Bridgerton, so it’s no surprise that this trend is just as popular in interior design,” says Cassandra Leisz, creative director at Ruggable

While you could commit to it longer term with a butter yellow oven or kitchen cabinetry, something a little less permanent, such as a rug with the soft shade woven throughout, could be an easier way to dip your toe into the trend. “When incorporating butter yellow, balance is essential,” Cassandra advises. “Pair it with neutrals like natural whites or warm beiges to create a harmonious look. These combinations allow the butter yellow to shine without dominating the space.”

Want to spread a little sunshine in your home? Here are nine delectable finds to get you started.

The post 7 pieces of wall art we would adorn our walls with in 2025 appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Wall art is more than home decor — it’s a direct expression of our cultural tastes, values and personal histories. A print of a famous artwork will usually be an indication of someone’s appreciation for fine art, while a painting of a certain city may reveal their connection or history with that place.

Some of my favourite homes have been the ones filled with art — my grandmother’s bathroom walls were always adorned with drawings of female figures and my first rental was filled with the landlord’s collection of Aboriginal artworks from his time in an outback community. Since moving states, my walls now hold pictures of the beaches and buildings of home.

Your art also doesn’t have to be sentimental — it can simply be an opportunity to experiment with different colours and aesthetics in your home. In recent years, vintage Italian posters of liqueurs or apéritifs (such as Aperol and Limoncello) have become popular for contemporary coastal styles, and vintage portraits and still life artworks are currently experiencing a renaissance with the rise of traditional English interior styles.

While the right piece of wall art for your home will depend entirely on your own interior style and space, we can share the pieces we currently have our eye on.

What’s hot in homewares: dessert coupes, coffee table dining and Bridget Jones’ yellow kitchen https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/new-release-homewares/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 04:39:36 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/new-release-homewares Everything we're coveting in interiors this month.

As we hurtle towards March and feel the summer slip away, many of us can experience a sense of sadness as ‘real’ part of the year takes hold. In our opinion, shopping for new decor is a good as remedy as any for battling the end of summer blues.

This month, we’re all about elevating our hostess status with cute dessert coupes, while rethinking the dining table and obsessing over Bridget Jones’ new yellow kitchen.

The best interior trends and homewares to shop in March 2025

Dessert coupes

Dessert coupes
@michelleconceptstore

Silver dessert coupes are one of the many wedding ideas that sounded genius when I first got engaged and utterly ridiculous as the reality of wedding planning hit. These chic little glasses have been all over the Instagram feeds of my favourite French influencers, elevating the simplest scoop of icecream or cup of berries at their uber cool dinner parties.

While collecting 100 antique coupe glasses might not be something i’ll be torturing myself with in the lead up to my own wedding, I will still be searching for the perfect coupe set for my home (and future soirees).

 1. Ice cream cups, $218 from Michelle Concept Store Glam
 2. Gohar World set of two silver-tone desser coupes, $299 from Net-A-Porter
 3. The seashell coupe glass, $89.95 from The Outlier
 4. Steel goblet set of 2, $40 from In The Roundhouse

Coffee table dining

Since Castlery released its clever ‘Hugg’ coffee table design, I’ve been thinking more about coffee table dining as a concept. While Europeans seem to be relatively adept at throwing a few floor cushions around the coffee table and calling it a dinner party, us Australians tend to be more attached to our dining tables.

Yet, as I’ve learnt since moving into a 28m² apartment with no room for a dining table, enjoying a meal closer to the floor tends to bring a more relaxed and open energy to a group.

Doing coffee table dining well however, doesn’t mean forgoing comfort or style. A few cute floor cushions, a couple of low chairs and your favourite table linens will all give your coffee table the dinner party glow up that it deserves.

 1. Avery stripe ruffle floor cushion, $89.95 from Pillow Talk
 2. La La Chair in flamingo, $1500 from Fenton & Fenton
 3. Hugg nesting square coffee table, $1299 from Castlery
 4. Pomodoro embroidered 4-Piece napkin set, $41.99 (usually $59.99) from Linen House

Bridget Jones’ yellow kitchen

Yellow decor

It’s safe to say that the new Bridget Jones film, Mad About The Boy, left us all with a strong desire to paint our kitchens yellow. In our opinion, the increasingly popular and super soft butter yellow is the best place to start with the sunshiney shade. This shade also happens to be KitchenAid’s colour of the year, with their new butter yellow mixer even making a cute appearance in Bridget Jones’ kitchen.

 1. Artisan tilt-head stand mixer KSM195, $949 from Kitchen Aid
 2. Molto stripe main plate, bright yellow, $95 from Alex and Trahanas
 3. Layla lemon european pillowcase, $41.99 (usually $51.99) from Linen House

Steve Cordony on where to begin when styling a space and why https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/steve-cordony-interior-stylist-tips/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 04:58:36 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1264637 We're creating moments, people.

The post Steve Cordony on where to begin when styling a space and why appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
For many, achieving a magazine-worthy home feels like a distant dream. For Steve Cordony, it’s just another day at work. As one of Australia’s leading interior stylists, with years of experience shaping the pages of the country’s top home magazines, he knows exactly how to make a space feel polished and cohesive.

Now, he’s sharing his expertise in his newly released book, Moments at Home. “The book takes readers through nine different spaces within the house, and will show you how to create the most soulful, emotional response from each room through practical design and styling tips,” he says.

To celebrate the launch, Steve sat down with Home Beautiful to talk all things interiors – where to begin when styling a room, the biggest trends on the horizon and how he brought his dream kitchen to life at Rosedale Farm.

Steve Cordony answers your styling questions…

Where’s the best place to start when styling a room?

Any space or room I create always starts with a story. This can be an artwork to centre the room around, a memory or a piece of furniture or fabric that represents your style DNA. Building the room around a strong concept from the start will create a more tailored and cohesive interior, created with purpose and intention.

Which spaces at your own home, Rosedale Farm, have been the most exciting to transform?

The kitchen was a dream look that I had so many references for and I knew exactly how I wanted the space to feel. I had references from Plain English Design and DeVol, and knew I wanted it to feel like a contemporary version of a country home kitchen. Seeing all of the elements come together with reclaimed chevron flooring, Shaker-style cabinetry, brass hardware and tapware and Ralph Lauren lighting felt like a dream (kitchen) come true.

You’re known for hosting incredible events – what’s the secret to a stunning tablescape?

I always say you can never go wrong with beautiful flowers, candles, dinnerware, a great playlist and good company. Even styling a casual lunch for friends or family, I always have a concept or colour palette in mind to make even the simplest tablescape feel tailored and thoughtful.

What interior design trends do you see gaining momentum this year?

There is a real juxtaposition with two major trends I have been seeing: organic, earthy minimalism and bold maximalism. I think it says something about the chaotic state of the world, but also that people are retreating to two sides – bold or bare.

What are the three key elements of a beautiful home?

A home scent uniquely yours, great lighting – both sculpturally and mood-wise – and making the most of the indoor/outdoor connection.

How to decorate your home like Bridget Jones https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/bridget-jones-house-hampstead-mad-about-the-boy/ Wed, 19 Feb 2025 00:11:43 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1264446 We're mad about the house.

The post How to decorate your home like Bridget Jones appeared first on Home Beautiful.

The latest Bridget Jones film, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, doesn’t only see our favourite character in a new stage of life but in a new home as well. This time around, Bridget is living with her two children in a Hampstead townhouse. The new abode might be a significant upgrade from her old London flat but the cluttered and colourful Hampstead townhouse is still so very Bridget. Filled with art, books, children’s drawings and plenty of mismatched fabrics and wallpaper, the home is full of character and cosiness.

If you’re currently planning a Bridget Jones-inspired makeover, these are the essential design elements to include in your home.

Add a splash of colour

Bridget Jones' kitchen.

From the sunny yellow kitchen to the pretty coral bathroom, there’s plenty of colour in Bridget’s new pad. The yellow kitchen, with its mismatched chairs, plate rack and rows of herbs, is a particularly life-filled space, with yellow bringing a sense of sunshine and happiness into the heart of the home.

If Bridget’s kitchen has inspired you to bring with yellow into your home then we suggest starting with the gentle and highly palatable butter yellow shade, as seen in this cosy two-bedroom apartment in Mt Buller. Then, with its coral walls, striped furnishings, green tiled floor and red tub, Bridget’s bathroom is another room that pops with colour. The coral shade of pink is a particularly sweet colour for the room, bringing Bridget’s youthful playfulness into her new, more grown up space.

This pink powder room in Bangalow has a similar energy, with its soft pink walls, antique patterned lamp and chequered floor tiles bringing a sense of feminine fun into the small room.

Use wallpaper

Bridget Jones’ new Hampstead home really embraces traditional English interiors with its green patterned wallpaper in the master bedroom. Luckily, wallpaper has been making a comeback over the last few years, as people lean away from minimalism and towards more maximalist, colourful English interiors.

(Photographer: Tim Salisbury, Stylist: Penny Sheehan)

The bold and bright bedroom of this tiny Sydney cottage is a good example of how to embrace English interiors. Alongside colourful, mismatched linens, the floral printed ‘Adlington’ wallpaper by Lee Jofa brings a joyful sense of colour and character to the room.

Preserve character features

Patterned bathroom tiles and leadlight pocket doors are just a couple of the heritage features that give Bridget’s Hampstead home its unique character. In fact, the home’s gorgeous character features really demonstrate the importance of preserving a property’s unique features when renovating.

Photographer: Brigid Arnott

If your home is a new build, then you might consider adding features, such as stained glass windows and unique tiling, to give the property some more personality. Start by hunting through your local op shops and Facebook Marketplace for antique pieces people are selling secondhand. In this off-grid cottage in the Southern Tablelands, a stained glass window elevates this cosy dining space.

Add open shelving

(Credit: Photography: Eleanor Byrne)

You might have noticed that Bridget’s home doesn’t hide her items away in cupboards and closed storage—they are very much on display and celebrated. The easiest room to play with open shelving is the kitchen, where you can display your favourite mugs and potted herbs. Adding bookshelves and other open display units in the living room can also be a good way of bringing some Bridget Jones-approved ‘cosy clutter’ into your space as well.

Embrace the visual elements of family life

Just like Bridget’s old London apartment was an ode to her singlehood, her new Hampstead home seems to be an ode to family and motherhood. There are children’s artworks on display and colourful children’s toys scattered around the home. A cute way to display your child’s artworks is to frame them and hang them around the house like art.

With its wallpaper, colour, explosion of toys and sweet bunk beds, the children’s bedroom is a particularly magical place, where each of the children’s unique interests are loudly celebrated. The reminds us to let children be children, their rooms to be a space to dream, play and make a mess.

A claw foot tub

A red clawfoot bathtub takes centre stage in Bridget’s new bathroom and while the shower might be more efficient, there is something particularly romantic and luxurious about lounging in a free-standing bathtub. Here, Chloe Brookman’s dollhouse-inspired bathroom nails the brief.

8 trendy décor items that are already dated https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/dated-decorating-ideas/ Fri, 14 Feb 2025 05:12:47 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/dated-decorating-ideas Are you holding on to these dated décor items?

The post 8 trendy décor items that are already dated appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Thanks to affordable retailers like Myer, Big W, Kmart and IKEA, getting your hands on the latest and greatest décor item to update your space is easier than ever before, and it doesn’t cost much to do it. While some trends have endured several seasons, such as sanded timber floorboards, indoor plants and white-washed interiors, other trends haven’t quite experienced the same longevity.

The scary, and somewhat frustrating, thing about this story, is that many of these trends aren’t very old, but already seem terribly dated. Here are eight trendy décor items you need to get rid of now because they’re more passé than personality-packed.

1. Inspirational signs, quotes and words

While many people swear by the inspiring powers of daily affirmations, the powers of inspirational or cutesy quotes fall flat once in the context of interiors. It’s time to ditch the ‘live, love, laugh’ signs and move on to some unique art prints or photographic imagery for your walls.

2. Pink flamingos

While Palm Springs style has definitely enjoyed a resurgence, these leggy birds had their heyday circa 2016, started to fade in 2017, and now they’re officially dated. If you’re still sporting pink flamingos on your cushions, lamps or decorative objects, it’s time to let them go. Try a timeless botanical print instead.

3. Collections of ceramic animals

While some consider this trend kitschy and cute, we’re not sure it was ever a good idea! Try displaying collections of treasure or trinkets you’ve collected from your travels or family holidays, or even breaking out the family heirlooms and working them into your interiors. A balance of old and new is the key to any good interior.

4. Seashells

Popular in beachside homes and properties channelling Hamptons style, items made from seashells have had their time in the sun, along with artfully-placed pieces of driftwood. While shells can still form part of the mix, tone down the look by blending a mixture of indoor plants and colourful coffee table books to keep the look realistic and interesting or replace them with vases of fresh flowers or candles.

5. All-white everything

While difficult to get right, all-white interiors don’t have to be stark and minimalist – they can work beautifully with careful planning and the help of professionals. Integrating colours, textures and different materials into your home is definitely on trend and creates a timeless look, but don’t be afraid to try going bold with colours or dominant shades.

6. Faux fur

This trend piggy-backed in on the coat tails of Scandinavian interiors at the peak of their popularity. While the simple, beautiful and natural interiors of Scandinavian design will always be stylish, faux fur will not. Try replacing faux fur cushions with velvet, quilted fabrics, knits, or natural materials such as linen or leather. For your floor, jute, sisal or plush rugs are always a style statement.

7. Wavy everything

The last few years saw a surge of wavy, squiggly and curvy décor items, such as mirrors, lamps and vases, that—we hate to say it—are already looking dated. If you love the wavy look, we’d recommend exploring curved decor with some gently scalloped bed linen and cushion covers in soft shades, rather than in your hard furnishings that are more difficult (and expensive) to replace when the trend dates.

A bed with white and pink floral linens.
DO THIS INSTEAD: Play with curves in your linens to soften the shape. (Credit: Photography: Hannah Puechmarin / Styling: Hayley Jenkin)

8. Items that represent one specific trend

A sure fire way to make your house look dated is by following one specific trend. Whether its modern farmhouse, Hamptons or boho, sticking to just one style makes your home feel like a tribute to that trend rather than a multi-layered reflection of your life and personality.

If you feel yourself drawn to a particular trend, try to bring the energy of the trend into your home rather than the specific visual motifs. For example, if the boho look makes you feel relaxed then you might like to opt for natural linens on your bed instead of adding macrame wall hangings to your bedroom walls. Likewise, if you’re drawn to the nostalgic functionality of the modern farmhouse aesthetic look maybe skip the barn door and lean into open shelving and kitchen islands. Bring in your family heirlooms, books and items you have collected on your travels to add personality to your home.

Five things to do before buying that European fixer-upper you saw online, according to those who have done it https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/what-to-know-before-buying-renovation-property-overseas/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 06:07:13 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1264092 Escaping to the chateau isn't always a fairy-tale

The post Five things to do before buying that European fixer-upper you saw online, according to those who have done it appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
If you have ever fallen in love with a cheap European real estate listing that you saw online, you wouldn’t be the only one. In recent years, there seems to have been an endless stream of attention-grabbing headlines touting 1-euro-houses in abandoned Italian villages and dilapidated castles requiring restorations.

While it can feel like an opportunity to live out your Under The Tuscan Sun fantasy, waiting years for renovation approvals or finding out that your dirt cheap house actually comes with an expensive catch, can make the journey less of a fairy-tale.

This is an experience that Australian couple, Karina and Craig Waters (@chateaugudanes on Instagram), know all too well, after purchasing a run-down Chateau in France. While the couple have now been awarded for their incredible restoration efforts, the journey to get there wasn’t always smooth sailing.

“In the beginning, we were conveniently swept up in the fairy-tale of a Château in a faraway land, rather than comprehending what it would really mean living in a foreign country, with a language we didn’t speak, and the responsibility required of owning and restoring a historic monument,” explains Karina. “Adapting to the French lifestyle, culture and language has certainly not come easily, and it has taken several years for us to find our place here and for it to feel like home.”

Whether its a $1 house in an abandoned Italian village or a historic Chateau in the French countryside, these are the five things you need to know before buying your European fixer-upper.

1. Be realistic about your financial situation

(Credit: Photography: Brigid Arnott / Styling: Lisa Hilton)

European fixer-uppers often go viral for their seemingly low prices but it’s important to factor in the other hidden costs.

“Taxes on your home in France will be a significant cost to consider (they are large and numerous and the reason why larger properties are always on the market) let alone additional taxes from your resident country,” explains Karina.

“If you need to renovate, the costs are high (at least when compared to Australia), and you should also consider the difficulty of actually finding specialised workers in rural areas as you may need to pay additional costs for a larger company to travel and do larger scale work.”

The possible costs also don’t stop when you have finished renovating the property.

“Maintenance costs of a home in Europe (possibly as well as a home in your resident country) will be important to think about. Then you have to factor in things like travel costs per year and if you are planning on spending extended periods of time in Europe how you will work in a country where you may not speak the language. Even just obtaining a French visa, it took Karina two years of travelling back and forth to Sydney and France and there were significant costs involved,” explains Craig.

2. Start learning the language

The reality of living—let alone buying and renovating a property—in a country where you don’t speak the language can be extremely difficult. If you’re speaking to real estate agents, negotiating contracts and working with tradesmen, it will help to have a basic grip on the language.

In France, Craig and Karina found out that very few French people spoke English in the area that they bought. For this reason, they suggest “start learning right away!”

3. Rent in the area first

If you feel yourself getting swept up in the fantasy of moving to a foreign land, it’s probably a good idea to spend some time getting to know the area on a more long-term basis.

“Once you have narrowed your search to a specific region we would suggest renting a place for three months or so to really get a feel for the area,” suggests Karina. “Not just the scenery but consider – are there are activities on offer that you will enjoy year round? Are there all of the amenities that you will need (schools, doctors, supermarkets, public transport, a space that holds language classes etc)? Is there a group of local people who speak your language (as you will need a support system as you nurture your new life and people who know the area to give you guidance and also if you need help in a difficult situation)?”

It’s important to remember your move is not a holiday and therefore you need to be prepared for what living in these (often more remote) areas do entail.

4. Research the property’s past

If you’re thinking about buying an old or listed property then you’re going to need to read up on the approvals required to get started on renovations.

For Karina and Craig, their restoration process was delayed for a significant period of time while the right approvals were granted.

“It takes many many months sometimes years to gather together the relevant research and documentation before sending in the final documents for permissions. And then, you may have to wait a significant amount of time to find out whether your plans were approved or not,” Karina explains.

At the same time, it’s important to learn about your property’s past to honour any important historical details in your renovations.

” Take the time to research and understand the past so that you can best preserve this for the future. And if possible to live in the property before doing any work to embrace this past in a physical sense and understand better how you wish to live there in the future,” recommends Karina.

5. Get legal advice

One of the biggest tips Karina and Craig have for anyone considering a foreign fixer-upper is to get the proper legal advice.

“Before the stage of putting in an offer on a property, it is worth sitting down for some legal advice preferably from a bilingual lawyer and a specialist accountant so that you can discuss how it would be best to structure the purchase of a property,” says Karina.

“You will need to take into account issues such as being a resident vs. a non-resident, wealth tax, inheritance tax, capital gains, personal tax implications etc. In our situation, after reviewing all of this we came to the conclusion that it is nearly impossible to have a perfect scenario.”

5 ideas to bring a retro bathroom into the 21st century https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bathroom-ideas/5-ideas-to-bring-a-retro-bathroom-into-the-21st-century/ Wed, 29 Jan 2025 01:27:11 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1263179 Create a welcoming space to reflect, relax and rejuvenate.

The post 5 ideas to bring a retro bathroom into the 21st century appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
For many of us, our bathroom is a sanctuary. A place to refresh, reset and — especially if you have little people at home — take a much-needed moment alone.

Whether it is yours alone or shared, a bathroom that works for you and your home is a must. And while a retro bathroom can be charming, like all utility rooms, it will eventually show the wear and tear of daily use.

A brand new, fully renovated bathroom is undeniably appealing, but a full overhaul may not be essential if the plumbing is in the right spot and the tilework and waterproofing are intact. Updating an old bathroom can make it feel fresh and functional without starting from scratch. Here are some modern updates to bring a breath of fresh air into a retro bathroom.

1. Update your fixtures and hardware

Contemporary hardware with a hint of colour such as cool gunmetal, brushed brass or sophisticated matte black can make a design feature of these hardworking pieces.

Sleek, contemporary tapware instantly elevates your bathroom. Pictured, the Mizu Drift Basin Mixer from Reece.

Replacing outdated tapware and spouts with sleek, modern styles will give an instant lift. Swap a dated shower rosette with a luxurious rain showerhead featuring an optional handheld shower for a spa-like feel. Update your towel rails and toilet roll holders to match your new hardware finishes and choose fixtures from the same range to ensure a cohesive look.

2. Max your space and energy efficiency

A bath is an everyday luxury if you have the space for it. Swap a bulky inset bath for a back-to-wall design to get the freestanding look without any wasted space — or the hassle of having to clean behind it!

The Kado Lussi Back to Wall Bath from Reece gives the modern, freestanding look while saving space.

To conserve water, consider switching your toilet to a low-flow option, and choose tapware and showerheads with water saving features.

3. Choose a modern colour scheme

Colour can be the first thing to date a room, but it’s also one of the easiest things to fix with a fresh coat of paint.

Consider your colours, textures and finishes before you start your bathroom makeover.

Put together a mood board with colour swatches in modern neutral or earthy tones (e.g., greige, sage green, or soft blues). Consider whether you’re working in a warm or cool palette and choose your hardware tones to suit your colour scheme.

4. Refresh cabinetry and countertops

One of the hallmarks of modern design is hidden storage, which older bathrooms notoriously lacked. Update your bathroom’s storage options with floating shelves for a modern and airy look, and add baskets, open shelving, or decorative hooks for towels and toiletries.

Create more storage by swapping out a flat mirror for a mirror cabinet to hide everyday bits and pieces.

Add modern hardware to your vanity in your chosen finish, such as sleek bar pulls or circular knobs. You can also swap outdated countertops for quartz or butchers’ block for a clean, durable surface.

5. Add contemporary finishing touches

Even if you can’t do a full overhaul of your retro bathroom, a few modern touches can easily bring it into the 21st century.

Incorporate rugs and towels in complementary colours to distract from dated features or play them up with fun retro patterns. Finally, add a pop of lush greenery or decorative plants for a touch of life and create a sanctuary-style feeling you can immerse yourself in, every day.

Beyond white: The exterior paint colours that are trending in 2025 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/outdoor-ideas/trending-exterior-paint-colours/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 02:29:31 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1263063 Your guide to the trendy yet timeless exterior paint colours for a facade with serious street appeal in 2025 and beyond.

The post Beyond white: The exterior paint colours that are trending in 2025 appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
First impressions are important. The exterior paint colours of your home are the first thing people see, so if they’re dated or faded, it’ll leave your place looking lacklustre before anyone’s even reached the front door. A fresh lick of paint can make a big difference, but choosing exterior paint colours is not the easiest decision. “There are many considerations you have to make, especially around roofing, gutters, fascia and fencing,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, colour and communications manager at Dulux.

For a look that’ll last for years, avoid anything that’s already on its way out. “We’re definitely in the no more grey camp, please!” says Melanie Parker, co-founder of interior design studio Ivy + Piper. Read on as our colour experts reveal the new grey and other trending shades, plus how to add these exterior paint colours to your own home.

Exterior paint colours for heritage homes

(Photography: Marnie Hawson)

Going with colours you have a fervour for is important, but also consider the style of your home. If it’s a heritage property, certain shades will feel more appropriate. This Tudor Revival-style home in Brisbane was built in the Art Deco era and updated with help from Ivy + Piper. The exterior is painted Dulux Vivid White with striking Dulux Black detailing, which looks authentic with the aesthetic (as Tudor homes have quite a specific look). “A classic white house with black trim never dates, but we like to see some texture added with brick or stone to accentuate the clean colour palette,” says Melanie.

Be informed by your home’s original era and architecture when considering shades for its exterior. A fresh coat of paint in colours that suit its origins could be the best option, rather than diving into the latest hot hue.

Style tips for exterior paint colours

Try unexpected pops of colour

A home in Sydney's Eastern suburbs that has a soft pink on the window trims, a custom green on the fascia and soffits alongside a neutral white on the walls.
(Photography: Alana Landsberry)

Just like the unexpected red theory that has swept interiors, an unexpected pop of colour on your exterior can be equally stylish and trendy. “We always encourage clients to work with some unexpected colour on the trim and soffits,” says Melanie. This home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is a perfect example, featuring Dulux Piglet on the window trims with a custom green on the fascia (the pitched boards beneath the edge of the roof) and soffits (the underside of the roof overhang).

This up-to-date colour combo has endless possibilities. “A pale pink soffit with a dark green main house colour is unexpected but refreshing,” explains Melanie. “When working with old homes with architectural details, don’t be afraid to paint your deck’s ceiling strapping a contrasting colour or pick a two-toned trim combination for the windows and sills.” Stay open-minded about the possibilities of placing colour in interesting places.

Think outside the box when deciding which elements of your facade to define. Walls are an obvious choice, but fascia, fencing, fretwork, window frames and soffits are others.

Where to add accent colours

Bold and bright front door colours

Kate Walker and the KWD team elevated a pink-toned colour palette in this exterior, with shutters in Dulux Recycled which flank the front door in Porter’s Paints Newport Blue. “Most people tend to stick to whites, neutrals or darker charcoals on the windows, fascia and trims outside,” says Andrea. “Doors tend to be more creative, painted in many different colours.” Using a dash of a fun shade on your door or storm shutters can be an easy way to update your facade – and they don’t need to match.

“Front doors are, of course, an easy way to personalise your exterior paint scheme quickly and easily,” agrees Melanie. “Go for bright, glossy shades to accentuate the door’s design and welcome guests in.” If a brazen blue door is too daring for you, opt for a more muted tone that appeals to you. The year ahead is heralding in happy shades of all sorts, from soft lilac to pretty coral and rich plum. The key is to find a splendid paint colour that resonates with you and your style of home.

Melanie recommends using a vibrant shade on your front door to energise your home’s facade. For a sense of cohesion, use small doses of the same paint colour elsewhere on your exterior, play with half- or quarter-strengths, or add a complementary hue.

Creating cohesion with exterior paint colours

Timeless yet trendy green exteriors

This classic Queenslander cottage has the trending exterior paint colour of Dulux Remote Control, a relaxing sage green, beside white trims and a white picket fence.
(Photography: Hannah Puechmarin)

In recent years, we saw sage green everywhere. Now we’re seeing the full spectrum of this calming colour being used liberally on the facades of homes, from cool mint and warm olive to deep moss. “We love a splash of green on the exterior of a home and it can be accented with contrasting trims in really interesting ways,” explains Melanie. “Our East Toowoomba project features Dulux Remote Control, which can work beautifully on both modern contemporary and traditional homes. Another dark green favourite is Dulux Deep Brunswick Green.” When applied in palatable tones, green can pass as a neutral and is a welcome alternative to grey for Melanie. “We appreciate our lives are far more interesting than grey, and so our homes should be also,” she says.

If you’re going all in on a gallant shade of green, offset it with crisp white trims and natural details for a look that’s elegant and timeless.

Trendy yet timeless exterior paint colours

Trending neutrals

Your comfort zone colours haven’t gone anywhere, they’re just getting warmer. “We’re seeing greys, stone, greige, tans, beige, sand and both warm and cool whites used on exteriors,” explains Andrea. Dulux White Swan adds subtle depth to the weatherboard facade of this heritage home, while Dulux Lexicon Quarter highlights the ornate fretwork and frames the blues and greens in the decorative front door glazing. “As fate would have it, the original leadlight windows at the front of the house included these beautiful tones,” says interior designer Jessica Viscarde of Eclectic Creative. “They provided a stepping stone to explore colour, and the foundation that we built on.”

When designing for clients, Melanie and her Ivy + Piper co-founder, Elizabeth Flekser, are embracing the shift from cool greys towards creams, browns and earthier tones. “We know everyone feels comfortable with grey as it’s so safe, however it’s been drastically overused. Grey should only really be used on trims from here on in!” she shares. “We’re loving cinnamon and ginger shades, such as Resene Crème de la Crème, Porter’s Paints Biscotti or Porter’s Paints Cinnamon Sugar. Great soft whites are Dulux Natural White or Porter’s Paints Bone, which is still fresh yet soft.”

Combine timeless and trendy by using a soft yet spicy cinnamon shade on your walls, paired with deep green detailing on external windows or doors, for a facade that feels warm and welcoming.

Scott Cam’s renovated Gisborne house from The Block 2022 has finally sold https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/renovation-ideas/scott-cam-the-block-house-gisborne/ Mon, 20 Jan 2025 22:36:45 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1055113 It spent more than a year on the market.

The post Scott Cam’s renovated Gisborne house from The Block 2022 has finally sold appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Scott Cam has been host of The Block since 2010, but it wasn’t until the show landed in Gisborne, Victoria, in 2022 that he picked up the tools himself, renovating an entire house alongside the contestants and showing us he’s picked up more than a thing or two about interior design along the way. The house that Scott built, aka ‘Camalot’ originally went to market in 2023 with a price guide of $4.1 million to $4.3 million but that has since dropped to $3.8 million to $3.9 million.

But Scotty didn’t complete the renovation entirely on his own. Building company Nine in Six took care of the extension, while former contestants and builders Duncan Miller (from the show’s 2010 and 2013 season) and Spence Thompson (from the 2018 season) were enlisted to bring the old homestead back to life. And while the home was exempt from official judging, last year’s contestants were treated to a tour of a newly completed room each week as inspiration for their own home renovations.

After spending 13 months on the market, Scotty Cam’s Gisborne house sold for an undisclosed price on December 31st 2024. While we don’t know the final price, we know the asking price was between $3.8 million and $3.9 million. You can see the full listing on Domain.

Newsflash

In 2023, winners of weekly room reveals were treated to a night at Scotty’s Gisborne house.

The renovation not only brought the 1866 homestead back from the brink of dilapidation, but saw the addition of modern creature comforts, including Australia’s first 3D-printed building in the form of a curvaceous pool cabana.

Listing agents Evans Realty Group say the 10-acre property’s most appealing aspects include: Baltic pine floors throughout, high ceilings, herringbone brick floors, custom Christian Cole timber island bench and butcher’s block and views of Mount Macedon framed by mature oak and Moreton Bay fig trees.

Cast your mind back to the 2022 season and you might recall that the official price guides for all the homes was $4 million to $4.4 million. For this reason, it was thought that Scotty’s house might beat Oz and Omar’s record. Auction day proved a disastrous affair, with three of five properties passing in. Sharon and Ankur’s home remained on the market for weeks until it was eventually sold to entrepreneur Adrian Portelli for $4.2 million in November, 2022.

We’re looking forward to learning what the picture perfect property was finally bought for.

Neale Whitaker’s interior design predictions for 2025 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/neale-whitaker-interior-trends/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 20:48:35 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1063282 This is what will be big for the year ahead.

The post Neale Whitaker’s interior design predictions for 2025 appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
If anyone has their finger on the pulse of interior design trends, it’s Neale Whitaker. Not only is he an interiors expert, host of Love It Or List It and a beloved former judge on The Block, he’s also created seasonal paint colour palettes for Wattyl, lives in a gorgeous country cottage on the idyllic NSW South Coast and has built a gorgeous guest house called Taylors of Berry.

Neale recently spoke to Home Beautiful to celebrate the launch of his new kitchen and dining collection with Gro Urban Oasis. “Everything is designed to work perfectly together but also to combine effortlessly with what you already own,” says Neale. “It’s not a trend-driven range, it’s timeless.”

While he admits he’s “not big on interior design trends”, he did share his predictions for 2025.

Neale Whitaker’s 2025 interior trends predictions

The interiors expert talks us through what will be popular in the year ahead, particularly in kitchens.

1. Bonhomie charm

“I think we’re seeing a return to individuality, to kitchens with personality that truly function as the heart of the home,” says Neale. “It’s good to see a sense of bonhomie returning.”

2. Colour drenching

“I believe kitchens will start to move away from the uber-sleek, hi-tech laboratories they have become,” explains Neale. “Kitchens are functional spaces but they should also feel welcoming, generous and convivial. I think we will see softer, less streamlined kitchen decor with an emphasis on colour and materiality.”

3. Personality galore

Neale says that 2024 was the year of bizarre terminology when it came to interior trends. “It was all about Urban Aunts, Mob Wives and Dopamine Decor.” We are likely to seeing the niche trends continuing this year and it’s an indication of a bigger trend which embraces individuality. “Ultimately it was about self-expression and individuality, and 2025 will continue that trend,” shares Neale.

The 2024 interior design trends explained

In 2024 Neale Whitaker took to an Instagram reel to demystify five of the most weird and wonderful trends he saw cropping up on social media in 2024. “This year’s trends are next level,” he shared. Here, he breaks them down for us and how to make them timeless.

1. Urban Aunt

A home styled in the Urban Aunt aesthetic is filled with curated treasures and unique objects that, quite simply, radiate personality. “Apparently we all have an aunt that we aspire to who lives in the city in an apartment that is stuffed with cool things,” explains Neale. “I never had an aunt like that but maybe you do.”

While TikTok gave this trend its name, it has since been embraced by the likes of Neale and interior designer Amy Spargo of Maine House Interiors. “These collected interiors are timeless and overall interesting spaces to be in,” she told Home Beautiful

One thing we love about this trend is its timelessness. Here’s how to nail the Urban Aunt look and make it last long-term.

2. Coastal Grandma

Coastal Grandma is a ‘near relative’ of the Urban Aunt trend, says Neale. For this look think: the set of a Nancy Meyers film (especially Something’s Gotta Give) with its crisp white canvas, grand oversized furniture and breezy, timeworn textures.

Interior designer Kathryn Borglund of House of Hanalei says she often thinks about the sets of As Good As It Gets and The White Lotus when putting together the kind of luxurious, lived-in, coastal home encapsulated by the coastal grandma trend. “They strike a balance between luxurious and subtle taste, which I believe achieves the perfect coastal aesthetic,” she says.

But, as always, Neale keeps it real. “The only thing in my grandma’s house that I coveted was my grandmother herself, that’s about it.”

3. Mob Wife

“Yep, you heard that right, Mob Wife,” begins Neale. The dubiously-named trend was inspired by a fashion trend of the same name channeling the energy of strong female characters in films like The Godfather. “I can only assume a mob wife’s home is full of brass and bling,” says Neale.

Furniture retailer Luxo Living say this trend is all about “getting a bit garish”, so you’ll either love it or hate it. The key to pulling off this trend is to go big and bold, embracing glossy finishes, dark hues, brass accents and over-the-top decor like crystal chandeliers, velvet and animal prints.

4. Dopamine decor

“Dopamine decor speaks for itself; lots of bright colours,” says Neale. In other words, it’s the opposite of the all-neutral-everything (aka ‘sad beige’) trend.

Now’s not the time to be intimidated by colour. If your home makes you feel uninspired, consider giving it a colourful revamp courtesy of bold hues including cobalt blue, red, orange and sunny yellow. The idea is to create a room that is maximalist, playful and joyful. “Have fun,” says Neale.

5. ‘Kitschen’

Minimalist, integrated kitchens have reigned supreme for years … until now. Out with the sleek, modern kitchen and in with the “kitschen”, says Neale. A portmanteau of ‘kitsch’ and ‘kitchen’, this is the heart of the home you’ve seen popping up all over Instagram recently.

You know the one, it’s got the ceramic butler sink, a sink skirt, open shelving, a brightly-tiled splashback, plenty of artwork and favours old-school furniture pieces like hutches and free-standing islands over custom cabinetry.

“Kitchen minimalism … is out and we are proudly putting everything on display,” says Neale.

Trends may come and go, but Neale says the thing that ties all of these particular trends together is to “be individual. We’re seeing the end of the cookie-cutter style of decorating we’ve been seeing for a while.”

“At the end of the day, it’s about being you.”

6 reasons your home needs a plate wall https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/decorative-plate-wall/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 04:19:57 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/shopping-cutlery-plates In case you needed another reason to splurge on statement plates.

The post 6 reasons your home needs a plate wall appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
I’ve never been much of a host, so whenever I admire a beautiful plate at an op-shop, I usually put it straight back down again, knowing it deserves a more dignified destiny than just gathering dust in the back of my kitchen cupboard. But if you, like me, have scrolled social media for interior decorating ideas lately, you may have noticed that the old-fashioned plate wall is making a comeback, and now I’m suddenly regretting every plate I’ve ever abandoned on some wobbly op-shop trestle table.

When I tell designer and stylist Carlene Duffy of Cedar & Suede that I think plate walls are making a comeback, she politely disagrees. “I don’t think plate walls have ever been out of style,” she says. She’s absolutely right, of course, because the practice of displaying decorative plates on the wall dates back centuries, so the track record of timelessness is pretty solid. “Lately there’s been a bit of a departure from grey and white interiors in favour of a more English-inspired, eclectic influence,” she says. “Plate walls are synonymous with the kind of interior that is ever-evolving and the result of the homeowner being a real collector.”

Here are 6 reasons you need to create a plate wall in your home, with tips from Carlene and founder of statement homewares brand, No.22, Alexandra Pappas.

(Photography: Eleanor Byrne, Tim Salisbury | Styling: Anna Spiro)

1. They’re inexpensive to create

Plate walls make an incredible feature because they’re typically inexpensive to create and many people already have a tidy collection of plates they love, but just never use, sitting in their cupboard. “Plates are one of those things you can easily just grab at a market or an op-shop,” says Carlene. “It doesn’t feel like a big art investment.”

2. You can personalise plate walls to suit your taste

If you build a collection of plates slowly, the plate wall you create is pretty much guaranteed to be entirely unique. This is a huge drawcard, especially at a time when people are really celebrating individualised interiors, says Alexandra.

“People want the things they display in their home to be customised and personal, rather than stock standard. Beautiful and unique plates are an easy way to inject your own personality and taste in your home without completely renovating or buying new furniture.”

3. They can add dimension to an existing gallery wall

If you’ve ever created a gallery wall, you may have experienced a difficult-to-explain sensation that something just looks flat. Switching up the style of frames and re-jigging the layout may help, but sometimes you need to think outside the box.

“Art is typically either square or rectangular, so if you feel like you’ve got enough of that happening in your gallery wall, plates are a nice departure from that,” says Carlene.

4. There are no rules – collect plates your eyes are drawn to

“Don’t hold yourself to any rules, because that takes the fun out of it,” says Carlene. So when you’re browsing an op-shop, makers market or a department store, buy plates that you’re just drawn to.

“You could be drawn to the colour, or happen to love a particular print, it could be that it’s something hand-painted or something that’s printed, it could be English bone china or Japanese ceramics. Plate walls are great because you can bring together what you like and add and subtract as you go.”

 • Consider whether you want the plates to match or look more eclectic. Some designers love working with blue-and-white china, for example, while others prefer to mix and match different patterns.
 • Avoid generic, mass-produced plates where possible. Alexandra recommends looking for styles that are hand-painted or feature unique patterns or motifs.
 • Think about your colour story. While clashing colours and patterns can definitely work, selecting plates that have a common colour can make the overall effect appear more cohesive.
 • Be inspired by the style of your home. If you love the wabi-sabi look, for example, opt for Japanese ceramics. If your home leans more ‘cottagecore’ or ‘urban aunt’ look for plates in classic colours and patterns.

5. They make sense pretty much anywhere

Think plate walls are reserved solely for the kitchen or dining room? Think again. “Plate walls make sense in any room of the house,” says Alexandra. “As our homes become more multi-dimensional and multipurpose, so are the ways we are styling our homes. Throw out the traditional rulebook!”

 • In a bathroom where the walls are only partially tiled
 • In a vignette behind a comfy armchair
 • As part of a stairwell or hallway gallery wall

6. They can evolve over time

Can’t decide which plates to display and which to use for dining? “Why can’t you do both?” says Alexandra. Plates attached to the wall with an adjustable wire rack are easy to switch out as you please. “You can use your plates one week and hang them the next,” says Alexandra.

Carlene also loves the sense of controlled randomness a plate wall can add to a room. “Plate walls are just one of things that can evolve over time because they’re asymmetrical and a bit hap-hazard and you can add to it whenever you like. It’s a nice way for your wall to evolve.”

Today’s plate walls tend to favour a more organic layout as opposed to a rigid, perfectly-spaced grid. To get your layout right, Carlene recommends placing the plates on the floor and seeing what works well together. “You can add and subtract if a pattern or colour just isn’t working,” she says. “But definitely lay them out before you commit.”

Alexandra says to start with the plate you love the most and arranging the other plates to support it. “Use your favourite plate to guide how to choose and place other pieces, whether they’re matching or completely different,” she says.

How to get the right plate wall layout

How to hang decorative plates on a wall

Carlene says there are two main ways to attach plates to the wall. The first is the Safe N Sure Invisible Disc Plate Hanger which is essentially a big sticker that attaches to the back of the plate and allows you to hang it from a wall hook. The second is the Safe N Sure Traditional Wall Hanger which has an adjustable spring-loaded rack that can fit a range of plate sizes.

No matter which method you choose, says Carlene, “Make sure you get plate holders that are appropriate for the weight and diameter of the plate, because I’ve had a few accidents.”

Zen den, calm corner, man cave or she shed… whatever you call them, wellness zones are suddenly all the rage. While it might not seem like a necessity for your home, prioritising your health and wellbeing is important. And when these rooms can be so easy to create, why not try it? You can dedicate an entire room to the pursuit of wellness, or simply a little nook in an unused corner. You can even customise the types of wellness you want to focus on. As Mariah Burton, Folk Studio co-founder and interior designer reflects, “Our clients are increasingly interested in dedicated areas for wellness activities such as saunas, ice baths and gym workouts.”

If you want to create a wellness room, the first step is to establish what you’ll be doing in it. Is it for yoga or meditation? Reading? Cold plunge? Or work outs, like the home gym interior architect and designer Lorena Gaxiola created? From there, figure out how much space you’ll need. If you’re renovating or planning a home from scratch, the world is your oyster. But even working with your existing space is simple. After all, your own private health hub needn’t be elaborate, says Mariah. “You just need a calm space that you love spending time in.”

1. Home gym

Whether comprised of a few dumbbells, a treadmill, weights machines or all of the above, home gyms are a game-changer. Sam Wood, founder of fitness and nutrition program, 28 By Sam Wood, is a fan of cable machines, which use a space-saving system of weights and pulleys to strengthen your whole body. “They’re versatile, so you get bang for your buck,” says Sam. Technogym’s compact, stylish ‘Kinesis Personal’ cable machine is a good option, as is Nohrd’s SlimBeam.

2. Sturdy flooring for your wellness room

When it comes to your fitness space, flooring that’s both comfortable and hardy is crucial, especially if you’re (gently) dropping free weights on the floor. “For a room that’s more wellness-centred, timber floorboards or Bolon are fantastic,” advises Amanda Boyle, spokesperson for Technogym, which offers an interior design service. “For performance-oriented spaces we recommend virgin rubber to absorb sound.” Sustainably sourced cork is another option, suggests architect Melanie Beynon.

3. Ice baths

Not just a TikTok trend, ice baths have purportedly been around since Ancient Greece and may improve post-exercise recovery, reduce inflammation and pain, and bolster mental fitness. They can be an investment but they don’t have to be. From DIY cold plunges in the bathtub to economic inflatable ice baths to permanent cedar-and-stainless-steel jobs, there’s an ice bath option for every budget.

4. At home sauna

More of a heat-seeking wellness warrior? Consider adding a sauna to your zen den. “For health-conscious people who don’t want to pay exorbitant spa fees, having a home sauna ends up being more cost-effective in the long run,” explains Winston Tu, Luxo Living founder. Infrared saunas are a popular alternative to traditional steamy saunas, which use infrared light to comfortably heat the body and operate at lower temperatures. “Infrared saunas consume less energy,” says Winston. “They’re also easier to install because they only require a standard outlet.” Traditional saunas, he adds, are still great if you have the space, and budget for professional wiring.

Sam Wood firmly believes that infrared saunas are worth the investment in your wellness room. “Between [my wife] Snezana and I, we use an infrared sauna at home at least 10 times a week,” shares Sam. “It is an investment… but you can hop straight from the sauna to the shower to work.” Can’t swing a sauna? Browse Amazon for affordable infrared sauna blankets.

5. Indulge the senses

Regardless of its size, Mariah says the design secrets to a tranquil wellness space include: a neutral base colour; harmonious accent colours; a statement feature; mixed textures; and a signature scent (you could even pick one of Home Beautiful’s 10 favourite candles). “I like to incorporate a diffuser, room spray and candle that all have the same fragrance,” she says. Personal touches, such as woven baskets, robes, patterned towels and water carafes add texture, she adds, and opting for plants instead of busy artwork helps foster a connection to nature.

6. Lighting essentials for your wellness room

Natural light is key, asserts Melanie, while layers of artificial light can evoke the right mood in darker spaces. Use LED strips in coves, behind mirrors or to highlight rendered walls or textural features. “In my home, for example, I created a space with LED lighting recessed into the floor, which ‘washes’ up a timber-lined wall. When the lights are dialled right down, it provides a nice, honey-toned glow,” Melanie says. Additional lamps, wall lights or pendants offer task lighting and boost the ambience, she adds.

7. Read books about wellness

Wellness spaces aren’t just for sweat sessions. Personal library curator Lucy Pearson suggests creating a reading nook or mini ‘wellness library’. You’ll need a comfortable reading chair or cushioned seating — check out Business & Pleasure’s modular pillow stack — blankets, a side table, ideally an adjustable reading lamp and, naturally, books. They should look good, too. “Colour-coding books gets a bad rap, but for a tranquil reading space, muted tones are essential,” explains Lucy. “I favour book covers in off-whites, sage greens, pale blues and dusty pinks.” Aim to make your wellness nook a tech-free zone, keeping phones and screens out of sight and mind.

There’s no denying that the home office has become more important than ever before. Previously, a humble desk placed in the corner of a room would suffice but now a dedicated space that perfectly blends style and function is of the utmost important. And it’s not just because of covid! Modern society has seen a rise in entrepreneurs, the self-employed as well as creatives, who all often work from home. Such is the case for The Design Villa interior stylist and photographer, Louise Roche.

She invited us into her workspace and shared plenty of helpful home office ideas to help you transform your space in time for the new work year.

Off to work we go

Louise styles and photographs many of the stunning homes featured in Home Beautiful (such as this Bali-inspired abode and this penthouse with sweeping ocean views). Her north Brisbane studio is the perfect expression of the down-to-earth style we have all come to know and love from her.

Even the best home office ideas need pet approval and it looks like Louise’s pet mini foxie, Bella, is smitten in this room. (Photography and styling: Louise Roche)

But, as with any well designed home office, the space isn’t just about aesthetics. Functionally, this is a space for Louise to work in private as well as a meeting room for clients. “This is where I work on my styling projects, edit all my photography and meet and greet clients,” says Louise. “It feels open, airy and inviting, with lots of complementary textures that make it a joy to create in.”

The lounge area is central to the design and also features a library corner to house Louise’s collection of interior design books. Clients can make themselves at home on the King Living ‘Fleur’ 2.5-seater sofa, which is paired with an ‘Aura’ swivel chair to make it the ultimate collaborative space. “As well as being super-comfy, these pieces are a great complement, tonally and texturally, tying in nicely with the ‘Rutherglen’ rug, which provides softness underfoot,” says Louise.

Tiles create a stunning backdrop to these tactile elements. A base of ‘Tibur Bianco’ French-lay travertine tiles and a feature wall clad in ribbed clay tiles, both from Why Not Tiles, effortlessly bring a degree of homely harmony to the workplace.

“The sofa really makes the space and the option to have a high or low back was a deciding factor.”

As the editor-in-chief of Australia’s premium homewares magazine, I have to sift through all of the lovely things that come across my desk, try them out and discern which ones I think you’d love to see on the pages of Home Beautiful. While I’ve learned to be highly selective, as you’d expect, along the way there are certain things I covet for my own home. I can’t help but share a few of my favourite things – I’ll be adding them to my wishlist!

Tado throw in Charcoal sand

$99.95 (usually $199), Country Road

This neutral throw combines two of my favourite things to add a little luxury to the sofa: A classic check and a comforting texture.

Semi-automatic espresso machine with burr grinder

$849 (usually $999), KitchenAid

Once this beautiful espresso machine from KitchenAid hit my benchtop I said ‘Goodbye’ to pods! Though this takes a little longer to prepare, it’s worth it – I haven’t made a pod coffee since.

I absolutely can’t live without beautiful stemware, and these gorgeous little Pomponette coupes by Maison Balzac are a party in a glass!

Perrier Jouet Blanc de Blancs

$140, Vintage Cellars

Speaking of parties, you can’t celebrate without a great champagne and this Perrier Jouet Blanc de Blancs is sublime.

Titanium Always Pan Pro

$225 (usually $330), Our Place

I’ve heard these pans are indestructible and it’s the first ever non-stick technology made without PFAS (AKA forever chemicals).
I would cook everything from stir-fries to frittata, to steak in this because it will also go in the oven, withstanding up to 535°C.

I light candles every night and I can’t think of a prettier way to display a taper than in this gold-plated candle holder from Trudon.

It can be hard to see the wood for the trees when you’re browsing your local charity shop. We all scour them in the hope of unearthing a prize for a bargain. But what are we really looking for?

Armed with a list of must-haves helps make for a more efficient browse and others in your shopping party may have more patience if you can scan the wares efficiently and move on to the next. Here are the top 13 treasures you must keep on your hit list.

Did you know that January is one of the best times of year for op-shopping? According to a US study from Goodwill, op-shops see an influx of donations in the weeks after Christmas and New Year as people get rid of their unwanted Christmas gifts and start decluttering their homes. Spring is also a good time to hit the second-hand stores as people get into their annual spring cleans.

Tip: the best time of year for op-shopping

1. Silverware

Often dumped in together in a bin, basket or back aisle, a careful sift through for precious metals may yield the real thing – real silver will look tarnished, but polishes up a treat with a little care and baking soda.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s an egg cup, a candle holder, dessert spoons or an entire set of tableware, silver is always worth buying. Not sure if it’s genuine silver? Give it a tap – it’ll make a ringing sound if genuine.

2. Old books

These are few and far between and there are many practiced eyes ahead of you but, if you can score a first edition you’re happy to sell on, you’ve hit a payload. A collection of similar bindings or colours make a beautiful vignette and a bigger haul can become a feature.

If you don’t find any valuable old books, keep an eye out for design or coffee table books. Buying these books brand new can sometimes set you back hundreds of dollars, so if you spot a gem on the second-hand market, you should definitely snap it up.

3. Corningware or casserole dishes

Did you know that some Corningware casserole dishes are extremely valuable? Dishes with rare patterns have been known to sell at auction for upwards of $10,000. Even if you only ever come across the brand’s most recognisable (and common) ‘Cornflower’ pattern, old casserole dishes in good condition are still worth collecting. They make a great gift, especially for new parents or a neighbour knocked over by the flu. Simply bake a delicious meal in it (like this nourishing mushroom lasagne) and send it on – you don’t even need to worry about asking them to return the dish.

4. Wicker baskets

If you’ve ever tried to keep clutter at bay in your home, you’ll know you can never have enough baskets to keep it all contained. Wicker baskets are also beautiful to look at and can instantly add warmth and texture to some of the home’s most unsightly areas. Laundry piling up? Pop it in a wicker basket. Shoes collecting by the front door? Pop them into a wicker basket. Toys taking over the living room? Throw them all into a wicker basket. You get the idea.

5. Kids’ toys

While we’re on the subject of toys, it’s worth talking about second-hand toys. Duplo and wooden Montessori-style toys are so wonderful for toddlers, but collecting numerous sets can set you back a small fortune. They’re also used for only a very short period before your child moves on to the next big thing. Buying these items secondhand is a great way to save money and prevent perfectly useable toys from entering landfill.

Concerned about germs? Many plastic toys can be safely washed in the top rack of the dishwasher on a gentle cycle. If you don’t have a dishwasher, simply wash the toys in warm soapy water and, if desired, soak in a solution of Milton Sterilising Fluid for 15 minutes before allowing to air dry. Soft toys can be washed on a cold, gentle machine cycle and hung out to air dry. Alternatively, soak soft toys in a solution of oxygen bleach before hand washing, rinsing and allowing to air dry.

Other collectible vintage toys include: Polly Pockets, original Tamagotchis, Pokemon cards, ViewMasters and Cabbage Patch Kids.

6. Mirrors

It’s amazing how much a single mirror can completely change the look of a room. They create the illusion of more space and help to bounce light around a room. They also add functionality, and it’s a great idea to have a mirror positioned close to the front door so you can do a last-second once-over before you leave the house. But the best thing about a mirror? They never really go out of style. So if you see one hidden behind some bric-a-brac at your local op-shop, squeeze it into the boot of your car and take it home.

7. Interesting vessels

Old earthenware jugs, coloured glass vases, handmade pottery – all are worth collecting if you see them collecting dust on an op-shop shelf. One of the hottest interior movements at the moment is the ‘Urban aunt’ trend which involves styling your home with collected finds and interesting, one-of-a-kind pieces. Vases and urns are a great way to add sculptural beauty to your home and you can leave them empty or fill them with bunches of your favourite flowers.

While picking up interesting vessels is more of a style hunt than a treasure hunt, there are some valuables to be found. One US woman picked up a coloured glass vase from Goodwill for $3.99USD only to discover it was actually a rare example of Murano Glassware. She ended up selling the piece at auction for $107,000!

8. Collectible porcelain

Tea is literally heaven in a cup. If you agree with this statement, then you should consider collecting porcelain teaware. There’s nothing quite like brewing delicate tea leaves in a pot and sipping your favourite tisane from a vintage cup adorned with a stunning pattern. Collectible brands include Royal Doulton, Wedgewood, Noritake, Spode, Royal Copenhagen and Shelley.

9. Original art

It’s always a good idea to look up and scan the walls above the shelves – you never know, you might spot a piece of original art that just tugs at your heartstrings. It could be a tiny watercolour, a time-worn original oil painting by an unknown artist or a delicately sewn cross-stitch. When shopping for art at an op-shop, look for pieces that have been professionally framed, items with an artist’s signature and pieces that just speak to you.

10. Picture frames

Even if you don’t see a piece of artwork that you love, keep an eye out for beautiful frames. Custom frames can set you back anywhere from $150 for an A4-sized artwork, and even more if you select a complex style. A vintage frame will save you plenty – andcan always switch out the artwork later.

11. Mid-century furniture

Whilst we’ve all enjoyed this trend for some time now, there are still bargains to be had, particularly in Australian made brands, such as Parker and Knoll. The trend is moving into the 70s too and with upholsterers on every corner it’s now more affordable to revive an armchair, bar stool or lounge chairs – with cane insert panels if you’re lucky!

The owners of this mid-century inspired home in Sydney’s Freshwater created a dream entertaining zone with a table made from salvaged timber paired with mid-century style chairs snapped up on Gumtree.

12. Preserve jars

These have a pretty price tag as well as charm in some cases so beware! Add a small candle and decorating with these beauties adds charm to a dining table, outdoor soiree or bedside table. Fill with cotton balls and pop on your vanity.

15 ways to add rattan for a complete coastal refresh https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/coastal-rattan-furniture/ Mon, 30 Dec 2024 05:38:29 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/rattan-is-all-the-rage Classically cool, rattan is more than a passing trend.

The post 15 ways to add rattan for a complete coastal refresh appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
We think rattan burst onto the homewares scene about 10 years ago but the truth is, it was gracing home interiors before any of us were born. With a rich history that dates back thousands of years, it is the OG of sustainability, sourced from a climbing plant and endlessly versatile. The lightweight build of pieces shaped from rattan belies their strength and the relaxed aesthetic of the weave is evocative of travelling through the Orient of yesteryear, or sipping cocktails poolside in elegant hotels in Southeast Asia, or kicking back coastal style on a handwoven lounger while watching waves roll in.

While rattan has always had a natural appeal, particularly in coastal interiors, it lends itself to any aesthetic – from plantation style to French provincial, adding texture and warmth for that classic laid-back feel. Either as an accent piece or the neutral base to build from in any room, rattan is a robust and timeless way to style your home into a relaxed haven.

rattan kitchen cupboards

American oak cabinetry with rattan inlay by Loughlin Furniture helps to visually connect the kitchen with the adjacent living room. “I have rattan and basket weave everywhere,” says Mei. “My husband says I’m obsessed with baskets!”

What’s the difference between rattan and wicker?

It’s easy to confuse rattan and wicker, as they’re used interchangeably. While rattan refers to the plant, wicker is the weaving style. Rattan furniture is crafted from the core of the rattan plant, a climbing palm that naturally grows in tropical climates such as Asia, Africa, and Australia. And, much like bamboo, rattan is strong and lightweight.

On the other hand, wicker is the weaving style used for furniture and baskets, dating back to ancient Egyptian times. Natural or synthetic fibres can be used, with rattan being a popular choice for its durable and breathable qualities.

Coastal styling with rattan

The coastal look is all about bringing the outdoors in, with natural materials and breezy fabrics replicating a windswept beachscape. Cool colour schemes pair beautifully with the warmth of rattan creating dimension against a white or grey backdrop, with an accent chair, a few wicker baskets, or a woven lampshade an effortless way to go coastal. But, as with everything it’s easy to go overboard.

While a room full of rattan can lend itself to a monochromatic look with complimentary pieces, mixing too many colours or textures can quickly make a room feel cluttered. Rattan works best as an eye-catching accent or seamlessly blended into a home alongside similarly warm furniture and fabrics.

For a touch of relaxed style, explore our top picks of rattan furniture and homewares.

You are what you eat, but what you eat from deserves some attention as well. The plates and bowls on which we serve our gastronomic masterpieces can have a massive impact on how we feel about a meal. And you worked too hard on that Beef Wellington to see it relegated to a beige platter. Enter a gorgeous array of fresh plates, bowls and other crockery adorned with leaves and guaranteeing that you eat from five serves of vegetables a day.

Cabbageware – and its leafy cousin lettuceware – is a crockery design steeped in a fashionable history, and even now they are on some of the hottest tables in town. They even appeared at the MET Gala dinner 2024. Lately these almost olde worlde vibes meet more bright and modern patterns and hues in the most covetable leafy plates.

From salad plates and serving bowls adorned with leaves that look intricately hand-painted to whimsical and almost maximalist (at least midimalist) decorations on our dinner plates, these leafy decorations can slip beautifully onto any table style. Keep the rest of the table simple, allowing your leafy plates and bowls to do the talking, or go all out with the leafy theme and spark plenty of conversation.

How to style leaf plates?

(Credit: Adairs)

When it comes to serving from leafy plates, platters and bowls, the theme is abundance. What could make a home feel more alive than colourful, aromatic and fresh produce, in whatever form it takes? After all, we know that plants in our homes make us happier. You can even go a step further (too far?) and match the walls with green or leaf-inspired wallpaper. You can use your leaf plates to display fruit and vegetables, and add small or elaborate floral and greenery displays to keep things on theme.

There are endless designs of leafy decorations available, be it the traditional and almost kitsch cabbageware and lettuceware designs, or something more polished or delicate that brings a new level of elegance to the table.

What is cabbageware?

Cabbageware can be a decorative flourish or simply a vibrant and practical way to serve food. (Photography: Caz Machin / Styling: Lisa Hilton)

Cabbageware – that’s any ceramic that is designed to look like, well, cabbage – has been a symbol of kitsch design clout for hundreds of years. It first originated in Europe during the Rococo era, when there was no such thing as TikTok but trends still happened. Victorians loved its novelty factor. Even Jackie Onassis was a big fan of her leafy green plates and crockery – she collected designer Dodie Thayer’s mid-century modern lettuce ware. And now it’s back, yet again, just in time for spring.

Here’s our round-up of the most beautiful leafy plates and crockery so you can branch out into the greenery theme.

4 powder rooms that prove colour is key to timeless style https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/colourful-powder-room-ideas/ Mon, 30 Dec 2024 01:43:22 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1065860 Powder rooms with personality.

The post 4 powder rooms that prove colour is key to timeless style appeared first on Home Beautiful.

White colour schemes are the go-to option for bathrooms, and it’s easy to see why. Versatile and timeless, white exudes classic style, especially in powder rooms where space is limited. However, when done right, colour can transcend trends to infuse a space with personality and flair. To prove it, we explore four stunning KWD bathrooms for inspiration. From wonderfully wild pink palettes to moody forest hues, here are some stylish bathroom looks that beautifully embrace colour.

1. Dark forest tones

Dark colours are often thought to make small spaces feel even smaller, but they can also create a sense of depth and dimension, as seen in this botanic-themed bathroom. Here, Dulux in Strong Olive was chosen to coat the space from floor to ceiling, complemented by board-and-batten style panelling that draws the eye upward for the illusion of height. Dark greens, like Dulux Strong Olive, can also act as a neutral backdrop to highlight other features, such as the vanity and tiles. Sophisticated yet earthy and calm, the green palette of this bathroom feels like an instant classic.

“Have a little fun with your powder room. Express yourself and showcase your style.”

Kate Walker, interior designer

2. Earthy neutrals

Choosing wallpaper in earthy neutrals is an easy way to infuse a powder room with classic elegance. In this powder room, Mulberry Home’s ‘Flying Ducks’ wallpaper serves as a charming accent piece, rather than covering the entire wall, beautifully contrasting with the white wainscoting. When combined with timeless fixtures such as brass tapware, earthy tones bring visual intrigue without dominating the space. For a classic cottage style, wallpaper featuring animal motifs is always a delightful choice.

Bring the outdoors into your interiors like KWD did here with the use of Mulberry Home ‘Flying Ducks’ wallpaper in Taupe, available through Elliott Clarke Textiles. White wainscoting contrasts underneath. (Photography: Armelle Habib)

“Storage is not so important in a powder room, unless it doubles as a guest bathroom.”

Kate Walker, interior designer

3. Brilliant jewel colours

When it comes to jewel tones, an all-or-nothing approach can deliver stunning results. This powder room is swathed in opulent pink hues paired with brass fixtures that will age beautifully over time. The key to achieving a timeless look is selecting a hero colour and using it in complementary shades, like the KWD&Co Cristallo Rosa Quartzite vanity surrounded by Ralph Lauren grasscloth fabric. Mixing too many jewel tones can make a powder room look dated and unbalanced, but focusing on one key colour creates a luxurious and cohesive atmosphere.

This small space has a big personality, thanks to the playful pinks in KWD&Co’s Cristallo Rosa Quartzite vanity and the Ralph Lauren grasscloth fabric from Phillip Jeffries. (Photography: Armelle Habib)

4. Wild wallpaper

In this powder room, colour takes flight in a harmonious blend of pink and white, with the ‘Heron’ wallpaper by Gucci taking centre stage. When placed away from wet areas, wallpaper can create a striking backdrop in bathrooms, especially with vinyl varieties that withstand humidity well. While this powder room is rich in colour, its charm lies in a restrained palette punctuated by occasional gold accents that catch the eye.

The Cosmopolitan quartzite and Rosso Verona marble flooring, both from KWD&Co, blend seamlessly with soft pink tones, while the Suzanne Kasler ‘Juliette’ lamp provides a subtle contrast. Best of all, natural light floods the space through a white arched door, enhancing the bright and airy feel.

“Be innovative with the type of tiles you choose, how you lay them and where you place them.”

Is midimalism the design trend we’ve all been waiting for? Spoiler – yes! https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/midimalism-design-trend/ Mon, 30 Dec 2024 01:23:34 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1252843 It's the Goldilocks of interior looks.

The post Is midimalism the design trend we’ve all been waiting for? Spoiler – yes! appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
If you’re like me, or most people, you’re not really a minimalist but you’re also not a maximalist. Lucky for us, there’s a new design trend on the rise, hot on the heels of Urban Aunt and Unexpected Red. It’s somewhere in the middle and it’s called midimalism.

Just as you might expect, midimalism decor is midway between a pared-back, all-neutral look and a layered, pattern-on-pattern style. It takes a little from column A and a little from column B.

A bright cottage-style guest bedroom with a vintage quilt.

To achieve the midimalist look in your home, it’s about blending both extremes into one. So, we’re embracing colour in considered doses and using pattern like in a maximalist home, but on a smaller scale.

Indulge in playful elements while maintaining order. Think block colours, neutrals woven in and a sense of harmony. Here are a few ways to make it work for you…

1. Colour-drenching counts as neutral

The midimalism aesthetic uses expanses of neutrals to introduce a sense of harmony and calm that underlines the look. In this dining nook by interior designer Sean Symington of Sean Symington Design, there’s clever use of clashing patterns in the purple leopard-print upholstered seats and floral Roman blind and sink skirt. The reason this room maintains a sense of orderliness is because it stays within a concise colour palette, with the salmon shade offering a break for the eyes, much like a white or beige would (yet possibly even more so as it’s such a warm and easy shade to behold).

2. Give Hamptons a midimalist twist

The Hamptons look tends to stick to a colour palette of white, creams, linen, greys and blues. For a fresh spin on this style, look to midimalism ideas. That might mean adding another colour such as unexpected red into the mix. You could also play with touches of pattern, as seen in the curtains, cushions and bedhead in this bedroom by Melissa Balzan of Melissa Balzan Design. You can still achieve that Hamptons feel, but with midimalist sensibilities woven in, it’ll make your home feel that extra bit special.

3. Go bold but not everywhere

The idea of midimalism is that you embrace one or two big design moves, but keep the rest subdued. Like in this bathroom, where a rich blue-and-gold wallpaper commands attention. This is juxtaposed with sandy-coloured tiles and a quiet timber vanity. Gold and organic shapes bring it all together for an overall harmonious feel.

4. Curate, don’t clutter

In maximalist homes, more is more: it’s about lots of layers and large collections on display. For a midimalist approach, display beloved pieces but keep it a little more curated. The home of Olli Ella co-founder Chloe Brookman is a perfect example. It’s full of her family’s beloved items, beautifully displayed in small selections.

How to keep cut flowers looking fresh https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/how-to-keep-your-flowers-fresher-for-longer/ Sun, 29 Dec 2024 22:55:35 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/how-to-keep-your-flowers-fresher-for-longer They can last longer than you think.

The post How to keep cut flowers looking fresh appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Having a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers in your home is known to boost energy, mood and productivity levels. All cut flowers will eventually spoil, but with care, you can extend their life and make them last longer.

Whether you’ve bought a bunch yourself or have had the thrill of a generous bouquet delivered to your door, looking after cut flowers will have them blooming in your home for days, even weeks.

However, taking care of them isn’t as easy as simply styling a beautiful arrangement and popping it in water. By following these five florist’s tips into your routine, your flowers will be as fresh as daisies (literally) for so much longer!

1. Trim the stems

Cut 2-4cm off the ends of the flower stems at a diagonal angle. This will increase the amount of base area that the flower has to stay hydrated.

To ensure a longer and healthier bunch, trim the stems each time the water is changed.

2. Add vinegar and sugar to the water

Is there anything apple cider vinegar can’t do? Along with benefitting your gut health, it also aids the growth and maintenance of your flowers.

Add two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of sugar into the vase of water and stir.

This mixture holds the freshness of the flowers and provides essential nutrients. Make sure you change the water every few days and add a fresh amount of vinegar and sugar.

3. Clean the vase daily

Washing your vase and giving the flowers clean water every day (or at least every two days) is the most important step in caring for cut flowers.

“Roses, in particular, need clean water daily,” says Teresa Boreham, florist and owner of Flowers By Teresa in Sydney’s inner west.

“Wash the vase well and refill with clean water, adding a sachet of flower food (supplied by your florist) or a teaspoon of bleach to deter bacteria. Remove any spent blooms and leaves below the water line as these will promote decay of the remaining blooms,” advises Teresa.

4. Remove leaves and outer petals

By removing the leaves that are below the waterline, you save growing bacteria that would sabotage the growth of the flowers. It will also make your bunch look much fuller and brighter. If you are dealing with flowers such as roses, remove the outer layer of petals to allow the flower to blossom to its full extent.

5. Keep away from direct heat and sunlight

Flowers are kept inside because they often can’t handle an outdoor environment. It’s important to keep them away from windows where they’ll receive constant and direct sunlight and instead have them in a cool area where they can fully blossom.

01
